Livingston experienced significant growth during World War II when more than 50% of its workforce served in the military or went into production within the war industries such as aviation, Grocery stores, Aircraft manufacturers and munitions plants etc.. The town slowly grew throughout its early years until it reached its peak population of 25,000 in 1890. However, after World War I hit the area hard and production at the mines died off, Livingston fell into obscurity for most of the 1920s. It regained some popularity after it was included in Mayor Jerry Brown's Proposition 13 local government reform plan that made it one of the most populous cities in California again by 1985. In 2006, Livingston was merged with Mariposa County and became part of the new Riverside-San Bernardino County metropolitan area
