The Livingston National Guard, also known as the California National Guard, was organized on September 15, 1912. The purpose of the guard was to provide a military force for law and order in the city of Livingston. At its inception, the guard consisted of 1 officer and 11 enlisted men. On January 25, 1916, the name of the unit was changed to the California National Guard. On December 12th of that year, Captain John H. McDonald became Commandant of theGuard after being appointed by Governor James M. Cox*. The original commander-in-chief was Lieutenant Colonel George Wickersham*. In 1942 Captain Harry Kapp assumed command oftheguard after serving as its Assistant Commander during World War II* In 1951 Captain Harry Siskind becameCommandant when Lieutenant Colonel John Coyle resigned due to health reasons* In 1962 Captain Robert J. Bunting assumed commandoftheguard when Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Acker resigned due to retirement * In 1970Captain Everett Dworkin assumedcommandoftheguard upon LtColonel Normand Journelle's resignation * Since then captain Kevin Pimentel has been commandingofficerstheguard.* The first national guard unit organized in Livingston was called "The Californians" and served from 1912-1916. They were made up mostly of civilian volunteers who had no military experience at all! This unit disbanded because there wasn't enough money available for them to stay active for very long! After WWI came World War II and many people got drafted into service so there weren’t any more volunteer units left in town! So on September 15th 1912 a group of citizens decided they wanted their own militia so they set up shop with just 1 officer and 11 enlisted men! This is when they started calling themselves “The California National Guard” which lasted until 1916 because once it ended things didn’t quite work out like they wanted it too! It took another 2 years before they finally got their own HQ back down in town where they lived until 1948 when management went corporate so now we have our present day Headquarters building! (Building A) And back then it only had 10 enlisted men!) After WWII there wasn’t really much need for a national guard unit anymore since most people either joined or were drafted into service so on December 12th 1946 Captains John H McDermott and Harry Kapp combined forces to take over command from Lieutenants Coles & Johnston (who both retired age 65!!*) After Captains Kapp & McDonalds 8 yrs + watchful leadership our current Soldiers are properly equipped with modern equipment including an airconditioned barracks !(Building B) Our proud Unit has served our community faithfully ever since !!!!!
