The town is named after General James Livingston who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a US Senator from New York. In 1902, Richmond Cement Company established a cement factory in what is now Livingston; it became one of Northern California's largest employers until it shut down in 1984. From 1918 to 1992, Livingston was home to two major United States airfields – North American Aviation's (NAA) Air Force Base Redondo Beach and Kelly Johnson Field (KJF). KJF was used for training fighter pilots during World War II and Korea while Redondo Beach served as a military airfield for civilian flights during that war and also served as homeport for various Navy ships during that time period. In recent years, Livingston has seen significant development due to its location within easy reach of Silicon Valley, Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area cities such as San Jose, Oakland and Emeryville. Livingston, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of Contra Costa County, California. The population was 7,595 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Berkeley-Oakland-Haight Ashbury neighborhood in East Oakland and borders Albany and Hercules Streets. The first permanent residents of Livingston were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1793. A year later, Charles Hennepin laid out a grant on the east side of present day Livingston for himself and others as an act of vengeance for the murder of his nephew by a group of Native American Indians northwest of Sacramento. In 1846, two years after Gold was discovered in Northern California, Captain John Sutter founded what would become known as Sutter's Fort on the eastern end ofpresent day Livingston Creek. The fort served as a stop on stagecoach routes between Sacramento and Stockton before being abandoned in 1848 due to enemies within the new state government. In 1853, when gold was found near Bishop (now Redding) on the north shore of San Francisco Bay, local miners began to arrive to claim their discoveries. By 1861, there were over 100 miners living in Livingston proper with an average wage exceeding $1 per week. In 1863–1864 Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant burned down much of downtown including some adobe buildings that housed pioneer businesses such as Jardine & Bros., Girdwood Brewery (later Pacific Ale Brewery), and Wohlgemuth & Sons hardware store which had been established by James Wohlgemuth Sr.. This event is popularly attributed with sparking commercial development along present day Hercules Street between 3rd Avenue South and 4th Avenue North while also contributing to increased tension between white Californians and Native Americans throughout this time period caused by competition for jobs among settlers from both cultures combined with perceptions that natives were not equals under law or governance structures
