Lodi is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The population was 1,191 at the 2010 census. Railroad tracks run through Lodi and it is located near the edge of the Mojave Desert. Lodi was settled in 1881 by prospectors seeking gold in the Sierra Nevada foothills to the north. Mining operations ceased in 1922 because of over-mining and then World War II when Lodi became part of U.S. military airfield Clark Air Base. After 1945, Lodi declined as local businesses closed or relocated to larger towns and cities throughout California until there were only a few residents remaining in 1957 when it incorporated as an unincorporated community under state law no longer subject to federal jurisdiction. In 1969, Lodi began receiving water from Spring Valley reservoir which gave it some degree of self-sufficiency but made it difficult for tourists to visit due to lack of transportation access and facilities at Spring Valley itself. In 1990, Congress passed the Water Resources Development Act which authorized Caltrans to build a new bypass around Spring Valley reservoir and help revive Lodi's economy by developing its infrastructure including a shopping mall, high school, and apartment complexes that would generate jobs for locals when completed. The bypass was completed in 1992 and has since helped revive business activity at the town despite its lack of freeway access
Lodi is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California. It was founded by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1887 as a substation for its Main Line. The post office at Lodi opened in 1888, and closed in 1989.
