The city was founded in 1853 by Jedediah Smith and his party as a way station on their journey from Sacramento to the Humboldt Bay area. Lodi became a town in 1856 and was named after Lorenzo Del Rio, an early settler. The town experienced strong growth during the Gold Rush period due to its location at the crossroads of two major trails that led to new gold mines. In 1870, Lodi became an incorporated city under the name of San Joaquin County. After California's admission into the United States in 1850, many miners flocked to Lodi because it offered easy access to mining resources. By 1910, however, Lodi had shrunk significantly due to its lack of industry and infrastructure compared with other Californian cities. In 1914, however, when World War I began and demand for munitions increased in America, Lodi re-emerged as a significant commercial center thanks to its strategic location between Stockton and Sacramento. Thanks also to its close proximity to both Los Angeles and San Francisco (both large metropolitan areas), Lodi enjoyed rapid growth during World War II until it fell victim to the wartime rationing policies of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the postwar period, much effort was made by local politicians to revive downtown business activities which ultimately failed but has since been revived through initiatives such as City Council revitalization programs which focus on improving civic amenities such as streetscape restoration and development of new public elementary schools throughout downtown).
