Juan Bautista de Anza explored and charted this area for Spain in 1769-70 while exploration of California was still ongoing by other European nations such as Portugal, England and Dutch sailors. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Lodi became an incorporated town under Mexican rule until it attained statehood as a separate city on November 30, 1912. Lodi is one of two cities (the other being Fresno) that have served as both the county seat and municipal center for Inyo County since its establishment in 1864. From 1912 to 1964, Lodi also served as seat of Superior Court for Inyo County; however, after that date it has been located at Kingsbury City. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. It borders Mono Lake to its east and south; Kingsbury City to its north; Porterville to its west; and Toole Junction to its northwest.
