The Lodi National Guard was organized on May 1, 1916 by the City of Lodi and the County of San Bernardino. The original members were fifty men. It was not until 1920 that a women's auxiliary was formed and in 1932 a military police unit. On December 12, 1941, the California National Guard was activated to support the United States during World War II. On October 10, 1959, the Lodi National Guard Post No. 9595 was authorized to provide guard services for schools within its jurisdiction as well as for other community service projects throughout the county including but not limited to streetlights, playgrounds and water systems. In 1978, there were over 400 active reservists with twenty-one battalions divided into fifteen districts across southern California. The following year saw an increase in reservists when state funding for military operations in Central America made it necessary for Guardsmen from sixteen different counties to be mobilized statewide. Since 1984 there has been an annual Christmas party thrown by Command Sgt Major Michael Jaffe at Camp Pendleton which includes "a variety of games, prizes and treats."
