Lodi, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 9,022 at the 2010 census. It has been inhabited by Californians since 1848. Lodi was founded on February 12, 1847 by John Sutter and his group of soldiers from Fort Point Naval Station in San Francisco Bay. Lodi had its first post office on March 13, 1849. The name "Lodi" comes from the Mexican word for "a place where you can buy goods." The town's first store opened in a cabin that John Sutter acquired near the present day intersection of U Street and Fourth Street. In 1861 Lodi became part of the newly created Kern County and remains an unincorporated community to this day. In 1951 it merged with Shasta County to form Sacramento County. The economy of Lodi is based primarily on agriculture and ranching although there are a few small businesses located here as well. A number of local landmarks including Lodi High School (opened in 1909), First Congregational Church (founded in 1865), Adobe Walls State Historic Park (established in 1886) and Pershing Drive are still standing today while others have been replaced or updated over time such as the old post office building which currently houses a library
