It was one of two towns incorporated within Contra Costa County (the other being Hercules). The town experienced some growth during World War II when it became home to several military installations including Kaiser Aluminum Works and Hughes Aircraft Company's Alcatraz Air Field. However, growth slowed following the war as automobiles replaced railroad service and economic recession took hold in postwar America. In recent years, Lodi has seen a resurgence in development as its population has grown older and more active retirees have moved into the community; however, many local businesses still remain closed due to lack of business competition or low crime rates
