Coffee has been enjoyed by humans since before written records were kept. There are many stories and anecdotes about the origins of coffee and its various forms. One story tells of a man who went on a journey to find pure, cold coffee beans. He found them growing in an area that was then part of Mexico. The man took some of the beans back home and started to brew his own coffee. This is when espresso began to be brewed as a separate beverage. Loma Linda University was one of the first universities in California to offer coffee education. In 1912, Professor Edwin Pope developed the first commercially successful espresso machine in Loma Linda, which he named "Pope's Coffee Machine". By 1920, Loma Linda had become one of the largest centers for learning about coffee brewing and drinking in America. In 1969, university president Harry Caulfield decided that it would be inappropriate for Loma Linda students to drink alcoholic beverages on campus (thus beginning Prohibition at Loma Linda). As a result, all undergraduate students were required to purchase chalaza or café au lait from local grocery stores for their morning caffeine fix. However, this didn't mean that all students drank chalaza; many chose instead to enjoy their Café Noirs or Italian Roasts from local cafes downtown or at other nearby restaurants. Loma Linda is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Loma Linda Boulevard in the unincorporated community of North Hollywood. The townsite was first settled by Europeans in 1849 as Rancho Los Alamitos Spanish land grant given to Francisco Lopez and his brother Adolphus Lopez. The name "Loma Linda" comes from Mission Dolores (the convent where Mexican Franciscans built a thrived), which stood near the town site for more than 100 years until it burned down in 1917. In 1872, J.P. Morgan sent Representative James Meeks to survey some land around Loma Linda and recommended that the name be changed to Mount Hope because of its resemblance to Mount Holyoke (in Massachusetts). Morgan had been interested in buying rancho lands around Los Angeles but found no takers so he offered the new owners of Rancho Los Alamitos $5,000 for every mile they added on to their holdings—an offer they accepted. On November 15, 1872, three men- physicians John Crain and James Waddell and attorney George Fenton founded Mt. Hope Hospital with a single room each inside an old adobe building on what is now Main Street in North Hollywood (now called Santa Monica Boulevard). They named their hospital after nearby Mission Dolores’s priory - originally called "Diego de la Vega's Monastery". The original intent was not primarily medical but social; however soon enough patient numbers grew too large for Mt. Hope Hospital to stay open solely as a clinic and it became an Academy of Medicine teaching hospital with full surgical capabilities under care of Drs. Crain and Waddell from 1875 until its closure in 1922 due to budget limitations within then newly founded UCLA School of Medicine governing board.. From 1904 until 1923 when it closed again due to administrative changes within UCLA Medical Center opening day only 1 year later AFB Cadet Training Air Base housing squadron began accepting students across all campuses becoming one campus student body resulting Campus wide integration during World War I academic term 1945-1946
Loma Linda was founded in 1851 by the brothers Emil and George Loma. The school became a co-educational institution in 1875. In 1903, the school merged with nearby Claremont College to form Loyola University of Mary (later known as Northern California University).
