Loma Linda is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is located on the slopes of Mount Wilson, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 20,905 at the 2010 census. Loma Linda is part of the La Jolla–San Diego Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Loma Linda were Ohlone Indians who hunted and gathered food near Mexico Mountain. In 1821 Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico was founded by Santa Clara missionaries in what is now eastern Riverside County; it was then known as "the little Missions." In 1864 Mexican-American War veteran John Waiwahi established Waiwahi Rancho Santa Anita northwest of present-day Loma Linda. On November 6, 1867, Waiwahi married Mary Jane Lane; they had one child, a daughter named Alma Maria. In 1868 prospectors discovered gold on the mountain slope and began mining until 1880 when technological advances made this type of mining more efficient. By 1888 over $2 million had been invested in goldmining operations at various sites within a few miles of where Loma Linda now stands including its own small town center which became known as "Gilded Age Gold Rushvillage". Loma Linda students attended local schools until high school; then they went on to college or work in nearby towns such as Pasadena and Riverside for two years before returning to school full time for two more years after that. In 1926 Ethel Mudgett opened her Bakelite store at Fourth and Vine Streets west ofpresent day University Avenue which became an important factor in keeping the community active during these tough times with many families working at home from then until shortly after World War II when their businesses closed due to lack of competition or government assistance programs like wartime rationing which impacted all communities across America
On November 16, 1847, the first post office in Loma Linda was established. On October 10, 1865, the first train reached Loma Linda from San Bernardino. The town was named for Lorenzo Lamas (1811-1892), an early settler who helped found the town and donated land for a depot and school. In 1871, a new school was built on the site of the present day library. The original depot burned down in 1904 but was replaced with a more recent structure in 1912. The population of Loma Linda grew rapidly during World War II due to the need for workers in defense plants and other activities around the war zone. In 1948, Loma Linda became one of ten towns within California that were created as result of Proposition 13; this law limited local government power and made it difficult for communities to raise money to build schools, roads or other infrastructure. However, by 1970 Lomas Linda had regained some of its former powers and had developed into a thriving community with several high quality businesses including engineering firm Dow Corning and IT company Hewlett-Packard (HP).
