Loma Linda is a small, northwestern California town located in Riverside County. It was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his wife, Eliza Jane Sutter. The college was founded in 1911 by Dr. George C. Smith and Mrs. Jessie M. Smith as Loma Linda University of Technology. Today, Loma Linda is one of the leading research universities in the United States, with campuses in Southern California and Northern California. The university has more than 30,000 students from both inland and outlying areas of the state; it employs over 1,700 people including nearly 350 professors who teach courses on nearly every subject imaginable. Loma Linda’s campus occupies an area that once comprised much of what is now Downtown Riverside. Prior to its incorporation into Loma Linda University proper in 1911, the original site included a number of smaller buildings surrounding a large commons or park known as “The Park” which still stands today adjacent to the main entrance of the university’s campus building on North First Street (now east side Main Street). The School House (now part of Administration Building) was built around 1800 by Captain John Sutter for his family at their Rancho Los Alamos south of San Diego until it burned down in 1847 during Mexican American War hostilities between Mexico and America; Captains Sutter and Gabriel García Márquez later donated it to Lomas Linda College for use as a school house museum before it was sold to the college circa 1912-13 Loma Linda University first became operational on September 15th, 1911 when Dr George C Smith arrived from Pomona College with eleven students after serving as an instructor at Southern Methodist University's new School of Veterinary Medicine where he had been employed since 1908 while working under Doctor Jameson Fellows at Pomona College In 1915-16 Dr Smith served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at UCLA before becoming President/Chancellor at LMUARD where he remain until his retirement effective December 31st, 1966 He remains one of LMUards longest tenured faculty members having joined shortly after its establishment His successor Dr Lewis Wigley served for two terms prior to his retirement effective January 1st 1969 A plaque honoring him can be found outside Administration Building just insiderium
