Loma Linda is a small city in Northern California, located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Loma Linda" comes from Spanish for rock (lomo), and refers to a peak in the nearby mountain range that gives it its name. The first known permanent settlement in what is now Loma Linda occurred about 1848 when Father Francisco Moreno founded a mission there after traveling from Mexico City. In 1851, Don Carlos Borromeo arrived with his family from Spain and began living in Los Angeles County. A year later, Mexico gained independence from Spain and moved its capital to Mexico City as part of the Mexican Revolution; this caused some people within Los Angeles County to want to secede and form their own county under their own government. Father Moreno responded by founding a monastery on land donated by Isidro Obregon near modern day downtown Loma Linda. The new community became known as San Fernando Valley because it was near Canoga Park Dam on Mission Creek which provided water for many farms north of Pasadena. On December 15, 1893, construction began on Foothill Boulevard (later called Indian Canyon Boulevard) which would connect Loma Linda with Riverside and other parts of Southern California via an express route then being built across country by horseback riders commuting between those areas and downtown Los Angeles. Webb who donated land to build what would become Loma Linda University on his estate near Salinas in 1911. soon after he made this donation, he began to plan how this new school could serve future Californian women teachers who were then being recruited from all over the United States for Teacher’s Training Programs (TTPs). At first Webb wanted his new school to be called Teachers College but because there were already several institutions named Teachers College nearby (such as Pomona College), he decided against it and instead called it “Webb School” after himself and his wife Juana Maria de la Cruz Webb Alphonso (1887-1964) who helped finance the original donations totaling $2 million dollars which made up part of Governor Hiram Johnson’s Proposition 165 program designed to increase female enrollment among state universities across America through gifts and scholarships. With increasing numbers coming from all corners ofthe country - both rural and urban - faculty members quickly developed programs specifically tailored for women such as special programming sections dealing with child development; social work; nutrition; speech pathology; nursing; medicine; political science etc….and these programs continue today as nationally recognized experts provide innovative teaching opportunities unique unto themselves! However despite large growth throughout this postwar period there were some challenges faced by early administrators including Malcomson who felt that many students were not getting enough credit because they had taken too few coursework classes while others felt they weren't receiving proper attention from professors because they belonged to male dominated clubs or organizations? Despite these concerns Malcomson continued serving until his retirement in 1957 before being succeeded by Harry Bates who led us through some difficult times including increased tuition rates starting at $1 per credit hour beginning much earlier than planned due mainly to inflation howeverdue primarilyto HIS CAPITALISM THE UNIVERSITY DID NOT GROW IN POPULATION BUT OUTGROWED IN FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Which ultimately led TO ITS DISMISSAL FROM THE ACCEPTED STANDARDS OF AMERICAN HIGHER EDUCATION!!
