The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC)Historical Division, in cooperation with the Loma Linda University Library, has compiled a maritime gift history for the city of Loma Linda, California. The collection includes items donated by Navy sailors during World War II and the Korean War. Naval service members have been generous contributors to local institutions since 1898 when they boarded USS Constitution at San Francisco Bay. From that time until the end of World War II, nearly 2,000 naval personnel have given back to their community through donations of goods and services. During that time, the NHHC Historical Division has accumulated more than 5,000 items which are now available for research and study at Loma Linda University Library. Some of the most significant gifts from navy sailors include: an American flagship named after Rear Admiral John Sutter; a destroyer escort named after Rear Admiral Harry Wainwright; an amphibious assault ship christened USS Enterprise (AGI-5); two submarines - USS Scorpion (SS-623) and USS Pueblo (SS-604), both lost in action; three Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) landing craft - LCS(L), LCS(R), and LCM(L/C)-8; three helicopter pads - Helicopter Landing Platforms or HELP(H), HELP(K), and Helipad No. 3 - all contributed by airmen from NAS Alameda County Air Station located adjacent to Loma Linda University; a supply vessel called SS Comfort which was used as a base for land mines operations off Leyte Island during World War II; four submarines - SS Savannah (SS-527), SS Montana (SS-564), SS Alabama (SS-565), SS Florida (AGI-2); two gliders - Nellis AFB HL719G & HL720G flown by USAF officers from Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge during Operation Overlord on September 20 1944; five torpedoes shot down over Europe by RAF fighters between 1942 & 1945 Selected Gift History: USS Constitution 1898: Captured by US Navy Issued to City of Sacramento 1920: Renamed USS George Washington On July 12th 1920 she was sunk off Mexico City as part of US Marines` occupation of this country following Mexican Revolution deadliest battle ever fought against Spanish forces
