Loma Linda (formerly, Lahontan) is a small city in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California. The population was 12,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Antelope Valley Statistical Area. Loma Linda is located on U.S. Route 395 between Riverside and Ontario Streets in the town of Sierra Madre and becomes an unincorporated community afterOntario Street connects to I-5. The original name for Loma Linda was Lahontan which means "Valley of Lions." In 1849, Jedediah Smith discovered gold near what is now Loma Linda while exploring for newCalifornia land south of Los Angeles County. Smith named his discovery "Lahontan" in honor of John Capper, one of his assistants on his exploration party that included Kit Carson and James Hahnbeck. By 1850, most Americans thought there was no gold available in California; few realized that lay just south of their towns and villages on this vast new continent called America! In 1851, prospectors led by George Atkin discovered a large amount of gold along US Route 395 east of today's Loma Linda University campus - setting off an all-out rush to find it! By 1855, over 50 mines had been opened at various locations around what is now downtown Loma Linda - including two mills built by Sutter & Logan lumber companies as worksites for raising money to help finance their mining operations! On October 9th 1865, General Grant delivered remarks issued from Fort Stanton upon becoming Commandant General United States Forces West Coast during the Mexican American War when he said: "It has been my great satisfaction to see these brave boys go forth toil with so much enthusiasm into their search for rich spoil which they know will be given them back again hereafter as rightful owners thereof." During World War I (1914-18), many local businesses furnished munitions used by United States forces throughout Western Europe (including here at home). After the war ended on November 11th 1918, many returning veterans chose to stay and start anew life in what was then known as Rancho Niguel - starting what would become known as ranching country across Southern California...eventually leading to urban development adjacent to major highways like US 395!. Today's downtown area approximately encompasses where Atkin's mineimeters stood 125 years ago while also incorporating major university/research facilities adjacent such as classrooms, labs and buildings housing faculty members' research laboratories....making it one stop shop for students looking for information about almost anything related thereto!
