Loma Linda University was founded in 1907 and became one of the largest university campuses in the United States. The campus now includes more than 50 buildings and several thousand students. Loma Linda is also home to the country's second largest collection of wood carvings, including pieces by Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Van Gogh. The town has a rich history that goes back to its founding as a rancho. In 1824, Mexican landowner Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana granted his nephew José María Lomas 5,000 acres (2 km²) for development. The first settlers were families from Northern Mexico who arrived in 1827 and quickly started building homes and businesses on what would become Loma Linda's main street - Avenida del Rinconcito (Avenue of the Rookery). In 1907, when college founder Dr. Hiram Johnson donated land for the school he had built at nearby Pasadena City College, Loma Linda grew even faster than Pasadena City College did; within five years it had outgrown its original space and established itself as one of America's leading universities with an enrollment of 675 students by 1915. At this point Johnson donated additional land which led to today's present-day campus including many buildings that still stand today such as the Academic Building (now known as Hill Auditorium), Guggenheim Library Annexe (now Guggenheim Museum Wing), Hospitality Area(now Marriott Marquis Hotel), Science Center(now Brown Building), football stadium (later renamed Memorial Stadium) and others which have seen extensive renovation over time such as Goodwin Gymnasium/Doherty Gymnasium/Hospitality Area(Now Barker Arena/Shaw Theatre).
