Loma Linda is a small city in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California. It was founded in 1887 by members of the Methodist Church, and was originally called "Saddleback Springs." The name change came about because Loma Linda University, now part of UCLA, was founded in nearby Redlands. The Cement Company of America built a quarry at Saddleback Springs in 1892. A few years later, the company moved its operations to what is now downtown Loma Linda. The town's first store and post office opened on May 7, 1895. In 1902, local farmers decided to build a school for their children on the site of present-day Old Town Plaza. The first building—an oldadobe cottage—was completed that year and served as the town's school until 1912. Loma Linda consolidated with other towns in 1911 when it became part of Riverside County. It annexed all but one of its original settlements: Southtown (now Westwood Village) in 1912; Eastvale from Yorba Linda in 1916; Northville from Claremont in 1919; and Villa Park from Menifee in 1931. In 1933, Loma Linda became an incorporated city under state law following a vote by its citizens. At that time, it had a population of 2,500 people and included parts of both Riverside County and Los Angeles County within its boundaries. That year also saw the opening of what is now downtown Loma Linda with construction taking place on three sides of an open field which later housed shops and restaurants before becoming home to campus buildings including the current Main Building for UCLA Bruins as well as sidewalks running along either side of R Street which connected Downtown to Central Avenue/Old Town Plaza across from City Hall where business owners could set up shop
