The first permanent settler in Lomita were two brothers who arrived in 1887 from Mexico City. They named their land Rancho Los Alamitos after their home county of Alamitos, California. A post office was opened at Lomita on July 6, 1889 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1951. In 1896, George Waddell bought some of what is now called "the Hacienda" property southeast of town from James Meeks for $5,000; this became part of what eventually became known as "The Hacienda". In 1898 he built a large adobe house which still stands today (now used as a library). In 1899 he married Evalyn Ellerbe and they had one child together before separating shortly thereafter. In 1901 Waddell sold his share of The Hacienda to John Sutter for $10,000; this property became known as Sutter's Rancho del Sur which later expanded into other lands around Lomita such as "Los Alamitos" (later renamed "Hollywood") Avenue near State Route 163 and Carlsbad Caverns Road Further east towards Furniture Row Road. It wasn't until 1912 when Gurdon Batchelor purchased parts of Sutter's Rancho del Sur from him for $25,000 that Lomita proper began forming with Batchelor's ranch becoming its nucleus- much like present day Hollywood North side does with portions coming from various sources including Pritchett & Gamble citrus groves off SR 163 just south of Villa Park Drive) In 1916 Jens Jensen acquired title deeds toland southwest of town along LA 164/Carlsbad Caverns Rd., northeast of US 101/SR 163 (later I-805), southeast cornerof Property Line Rd./Napa Canal Estates & northwest cornerof HRVY Way/Furniture Row Rd., & finally northeastern cornerof HRVY Way/HRVY Way NE . Thereafter Jensen started building roads NW & SW from his holdings thru annexation or purchase by others-- resultingin ever expanding boundaries up until current day!
