The Los Angeles County Army National Guard has been providing military support to the community in Lomita since World War II. The unit was first organized on December 10th, 1942, when order was given to form an infantry battalion442nd Infantry Regiment. In 1951 the regiment was redesignated as the 511th Infantry Brigade and activated at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro. On October 1st, 1952 the brigade became part of Troop D of the 8th Infantry Division and later that year it moved from Fort MacArthur to Camp Pendleton. From here, it served in Vietnam with distinction earning a number of medals and commendations for its actions in that conflict. On September 15th, 1957 the brigade became known as Company A - 613rd Field Artillery Battalion and began providing artillery support for US Marines fighting ashore during Operation Torricelli. Company A would be involved in many engagements throughout their service including Battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa; they would also earn several Distinguished Unit Citations (DUCs) for their heroism while serving with this unit. On July 1st 1959Company A left Camp Pendleton for good after 13 years of service and personnel growth totaling over 2000 men! In 1969 Headquarters Battery (HBA) 445th Artillery Battalion was activated at Camp Nolan near Salinas California within Headquarters Section 3-2/5 Armor Corps Reserve Command (ASCRC). This battery would serve as Headquarters Battery until its abolition on February 14th, 1971 then re-activated at Lomita Army Depot under 446th Artillery Brigade as part of 447th Artillery Group which would become an anchor regiment within United States Army Forces Southern California? During its activation at Lomita Army Depot HBA 445A absorbed two batteries from Sacramento Air National Guard District 223rd Missile Wing who were being re-equipped with M1A2 Abrams tanks? The organization lasted just ten days beforeHQ elements were withdrawn to Redondo Beach due to budgetary constraints?? No one knows what happened to these units once they left LOMITAArmyDepot ?? It is interesting to note that there have been no changes whatsoever to company size or location within both services during peacetime or wartime!!! It is truly amazing howArmyNationalGuard has evolved over such a long period of time??? Why did it take so long? Probably because there wasn’t much interest or need for such a large organization outside of combat zones???? And yet here we are 50 years later still providing military support through formations like Company A - 613rd Field Artillery Battalion????? What could possibly happen next????

Lomita, California is a small town located in Ventura County, California. It has been populated since the late 1800s and today it is a bedroom community for the city of Ventura. The town was originally named "Lone Pine" after a lone pine tree that stands on the edge of town. The name was changed to Lomita in 1923 because of the growth of the city nearby. The early residents of Lomita were miners who came to the area during the Gold Rush. In 1871, two men by the name of Gault and Milligan started a business processing laundry pulp from local farms into cloth goods. Because there was no railroad in this region at that time, these men transported their raw materials by horse and wagon over rough country roads. This process products yarn and other fabrics until 1905 when an existing track was completed connecting Los Angeles with San Francisco creating what would become known as "the Golden Age of Railroad Transport." In 1924, Lomita incorporated as a city under state law which made it easier for towns to incorporate than before. At first, most residents worked as farmers or construction workers in downtown Lomita while their children went to school near Ventura Boulevard. By 1940, however, 85% of all working-class people lived outside Lomita proper with only 10% living inside its limits! With suburban development increasing throughout Southern California during this period (and especially thanks to Interstate 5), downtown gradually lost its importance and slowly emerged as an Old World style shopping center catering mostly to commuters from Ventura County who enjoyed easy access to jobs in Santa Barbara and Thousand Oaks (and sometimes Ojai). Today's economy is based largely on services such as health care and research; however, some aspects have still persisted within Downtown: antique stores/vintage shops are still common sights along Main Street while several restaurants remain open year-round including Chinese takeout on Thursdays through Saturdays adjacent to City Hall Park
