The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and disaster relief services in California since 1879. In Lomita, the first coast guard station was built on July 8, 1923 near present day Naval Air Station Long Beach. The area now known as Lomita was a major salt and pepper mine in the mid 1800s and early 1900s, which led to the development of a strong commercial fishery. In 1941, the Coast Guard transferred from military service to civilian control. At that time, it became an all-volunteer force with six stations scattered throughout California. On October 1, 1949, when California joined United States during World War II and took over most of the federal coastline, the Coast Guard also assumed responsibility for what is now Southern California. At that time there were only three coast guard stations: at Dana Point (1948), Santa Barbara (1949) and Monterey Bay (1950). With a population of just over 100K people at that time and no airfield or port available to host our personnel ashore, Coast Guard Lifeboat Service provided Search And Rescue capabilities offshore along with boat patrols during high tide crossings between San Luis Obispo County beaches and Carpinteria Harbor On January 1st 1957 Headquarters moved from Monterey Bay to Seal Beach due to budget cuts within the Defense Department. By this time our motto “Astromarine Protection” had become “Coastguard Services” In 1970 we received our first helicopter when USS Ponce crashed off Northern CA killing all 9 crewmembers aboard . Helicopter Patrol duties were added until 1976 when we transitioned intoESS patrol boats with 4 boats per squadron . Our current mission is calledGuardian Angels after receiving our new EPB-3D chopper in 2006

Lomita is a small town in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, within Los Angeles County's Eastside district. The name "Lomita" comes from Spanish and means "a long beach". As early as 1878, Lomita had been a summer resort destination for people from Southern California. In 1907, a group of entrepreneurs named William Harkness and his brother-in-law Harry Chandler bought land near what is now Lomita Boulevard and developed it into a large resort called Clearwater Beach Resort & Casino. The original location became known as Lomita Cove due to its clear waters and long beachfront promenade. In 1923, writer Sinclair Lewis wrote an autobiographical article about his experiences living in Hollywood during that time period entitled "The Stars Are Out Tonight". In it, he refers to Clearwater Beach Resort & Casino as "the biggest[ ] place on Earth".[1] Lewis also mentions that celebrities such as Clark Gable and Gloria Swanson used to vacation there when they were not working or living in Hollywood. In 1951, American aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Corporation moved its main plant from Skunk Works Arsenal in Waco Heights to nearby Monterrey Park while construction continued on their new high-tech headquarters adjacent to Interstate 5 (I-5). The company purchased 400 acres (160 hectares) of undeveloped land east of present day Lomita Boulevard between Ventura Boulevard and Business 4th Street for $2 million dollars which would become Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company's new production line site. This area currently housing the old RCA Victor studios remains primarily undeveloped today with only limited retail development taking place around it aside from some homesites next to I-5 highway shoulders
