Lomita, California is a small community located in the eastern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, about 10 miles east of downtown LA. Population was 17,814 at the 2010 census. The name Lomita comes from the Mono people and is likely derived from "lomo" (a type of bread). The first Europeans to visit Lomita were Franciscan friars who arrived in 1602 and named it Rancho La Mesa after their religious order's rancho (land grant) on top of Mt. Lemmon. Mexican soldiers burned down theMission Dolores Adobe in 1821 during an uprising against Spanish rule. In 1861, Captain George A. Smith landed his boat at Point Conception and built a small anchorage on what is now Harbor Boulevard for landing equipment and supplies on his way to Gold Rush ventures in nearby Humboldt County. In 1867 he sold part of this land to businessman Jardine Morgan for $2,000 (). Development began with Morgan building homes on a large lot he purchased near Point Conception between 1870-1871; two years later they moved ashore when waves broke over the dry docks created by shipbuilding operations on Long Beach Peninsula then part of Mexico (). Morgan ran into financial problems while developing Lomita but was able to sell off most of his holdings including some home mortgages to local investors before bankruptcy closed many doors in 1906 forced him out onto Center Street where he lived until his death aged 82. His wife Emilie de Rothschild bought much of what remains today including numerous period houses built by her architect father Rudolph Wegener which she restoration/repaired beginning in 1958-1959 according to plans provided by her husband’s son Maurice Wegener Jr.. urdirector general for architecture at Hollywood Chamber Music Opera from 1942-1946 and Mrs Ethel Rosenberg also resided here intermittently between 1944-1945 as president pro tempore of the Pasadena Democratic Club prior to joining her brother Julius Rosenberg in Cold War espionage activities there.. . . . . Many other notable residents have included: actors Clark Gable, Norma Shearer, Cary Grant and Edward G Robinson; journalists Walter Winchell, Dorothy Parker and Herbert Hoover; authors Fannie Flagg and Anita Loos; politicians Governor Edmund Doheny (1920), Irwin Shaw (1925), Earl Warren (1928), Ronald Reagan (1981) among others .....

Today's economy relies largely on services such as healthcare (both municipal government services and private insurance), education (including both public schools and private universities), tourism/restaurants/hospitality/transportation etc., as well as mining (which began here more than 60 years ago). Lomita also has some interesting attractions including Pismo Beach State Park with its dramatic coastlinelines on either side of Interstate 5; several wineries around downtown; plus two large theme parks - Six Flags Over California in the city center and WDW's Hollywood Studios - both within a few miles of downtown.
Lomita, California was founded in 1849 by Pedro Fontana and his wife Maria Luisa. The town was named after Lomita Creek which flows through the area. In 1870, the City of San Francisco was established on the site of present-day San Francisco and Lomita became part of that city. On July 14, 1876, a fire destroyed most of the town, leaving only a few buildings standing.
