Today, La Compañía de Acuña y Torres is one of the largest and most respected coffee companies in the United States. Their beans are sold both online and through local retailers across North America. The history of Lomita goes back even further than that- on December 3rd, 1860, Carlos Marquez established The Coffee Company at 149th Street and Union Grove Avenue in what is now known as Santa Ana. Marquez’s store was the first such establishment in Orange County. He imported Java Coffee from Indonesia and roasted it himself- this led to him being called “The King Of Coffee”! Many famous LA businesses were started or expanded by Carlos Marquez including Don Pablo’s Cafeteria which served as the first Mexican restaurant in Southern California; El Garmento Supermarket which was located on Military Road adjacent to USC; El Rancho Café which grew out of a hardware store; Pico Rivera Chinese Restaurant which served Cantonese food until it closed down in 1969; Los Angeles State Fairgrounds where there were two types of restaurants: Exhibition Gardens which had international cuisine like French onion soup with shrimp & lobster ;and Agricultural Grounds where you could purchase all sorts of groceries like eggs, milk, breadfruit etc.; as well as several convenience stores such as The Cleaners (now known as Pep Boys) and Texaco (now Mobil).

In 1863, Lomita became a town when it amalgamated with neighboring Newport Beach to form the City of Newport Beach. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to the military base at Malaya Peninsula and its ability to produce munitions needed for the war effort. After the war, Lomita experienced a period of decline and social unrest which led to several occupations of government buildings by labor groups. In 1965, Lomita became an unincorporated community again when it merged with Laguna Beach. In 1824, two Swiss scientists named Johann Zumpt and Friedrich Schneider developed a way to roast coffeebeans without using fire or smoke which allowed them to become popular among European nobility as well as farmers and baristas throughout much of Europe. It wasn’t until 1840 when French roasters began producing quality beans under the name La Colombe which led to espresso becoming an established drink throughout most of Europe. However, despite this growth, it didn’t take long for Ethiopian goats to begin pulling all of the beans for Northwest Ethiopia’s first commercial café – Gadalla Coffee House – in 1865 after Emperor Haile Selassie I mandated equitable distribution among his subjects regardless of social class or race (although women could not own land). This early success set off a period of rapid expansion for Ethiopian café culture where cafes multiplied rapidly across Addis Ababa with branches opening up outside of city limits into rural areas where there was no access to public transportation or even electricity (the only way for peopleOutsideTheCityToDineInCafesback then was by walking). Lomita, California is a small town in Alameda County, California, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and its population was 3,653 at the 2010 census. The name Lomita comes from Spanish word "lomo" meaning "a sheep". The first European to visit the area was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 16, 1769 when he sighted Mount Diablo from his ship La Paz anchored about 4 miles off the coast of present-day Lomita. De Anza named the mountain Diablo after this peak. In 1846, as part of an effort by General George Custer to take possession of all Mexican land east of Sacramento River in what is now Wyoming Territory (the Dakota Territory at that time), Lieutenant Colonel John J. Pershing ordered Major James Hance to march his column through what is now Lomita and lay siege to Coyote Hills Rancho del Norte near modern day Petaluma. On July 24th 1846 Hance's column reached Coyote Hills Rancho del Norte after marching for more than 100 miles over rugged terrain and passing through several towns including Amador City and Jamestown before reaching Lomita on July 25th A strong windstorm caused major problems for Hance's column while they were camped out around Coyote Hills; however Pershing refused to give up until evening upon learning that reinforcements were coming up the road in force. By midnight on July 26th most of Hance's force had withdrawn back into Mexico but about 30 men who went ahead scouting found a place where they could shelter until morning without being seen by any Mexicans and returned safe home with their report. This event became known as 'The Battle at Coyote Hills'.
