Lomita is a small town in Orange County, California, located on the Pacific Coast. The population was 7,713 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Anaheim and west of Huntington Beach. Lomita's ZIP code is 92636. Lomita was founded by Mexican American José Nieto in 1915 as Rancho Viejo de la Roca. The name comes from the Spanish word "lomo," meaning "a cow." Nieto sold the ranch to Hosea Hall in 1926 and moved his family to nearby Garden Grove. In 1950, Hall sold the deed to Richard Mathers for $2 million and began developing it into a resort community called Lomita Hills. Mathers built a Majestic Palace hotel and other luxury structures including a golf course and an airport serving Lomita residents until his death in 1978. After Mathers' death, control of Lomita Hills passed through his son-in-law Harry Chandler to his daughter Rita Chapman until her death in 2003; then it passed through her sister Kathy Weisman's family until it was acquired by businessman Dean Spanos in 2005 who has used it as an entertainment complex with three theme parks - those two being Mickey Mouse World of Adventures (opened 2009) adjacent to Ballpark Bayou park and Disney's Hollywood Studios - since 2006 when he purchased all of Orange County's land south of Interstate 5 (the bulk including Disneyland).
