Lomita is a small city located in southern California. The population was estimated to be just over 12,000 in 2010. It is the county seat of San Diego County and is adjacent to the Mexican state of Baja California. Lomita is a small town in San Diego County, California, located on the Pacific coast. It was founded in 1887 by Spanish immigrants and has been named for Lomas de la Trona, a mountain range that includes the town. The population of Lomita was 5,352 as of 2010. The first Europeans to sight what is now Lomita were maritime captains sailing from Santa Barbara to Acapulco during the 18th century. In 1795 Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo explored and charted what is now Point Conception and discovered land between San Diego Bay and La Jolla Bay which he named "Isla de la Trona" (Island of the Cliff). In 1847 Francisco Paloma landed at Lomita with his men after spending two years exploring Baja California Peninsula. He named it Rancho Real de los Padres Samanarios y Tejon Santiago y Arce because he owned all of this land including present-day Lomita. The name "Lomas de la Trona" (Mountain Range of the Toons) was given to it by Francisco Peralta, who had also surveyed and charted much of Baja California Peninsula in 1827-28 when he served as governor of Guerrero Province. A post office called Rancho Los Alamitos was established at Lomita on December 12, 1889; it continued until May 15, 1912. A new post office called Rancho Cucamonga opened at Lomita on January 8, 1896; it continued until October 26, 1916. In 1907 Captain John Waddell became US Naval Commander Commanding UDT 7 around which developed many programs designed to promote fishing interests along the Mexican coastline including mainting an artificial reef off Point Conception beach near today's Harbor Drive entrance into service on November 16 that year with launching operations from Menlo Park Pier #1 adjacent thereto under command of Ltcdr JF McClusky commanding UDT 7U2 led by Captains HJ Goodrich and JC Whitehead accompanying him as part Sailing Master (and later First Mate). This program eventually produced over 100 tons worth fresh catch averaging over $1 per tonne caught within three months from various points ashore but never saw combat due to lack thereof artillery fire support available then or since! The harbor facilities we have today were built primarily using federal funds provided throughOperation Floodlight! Today those same resources provide economic stability for our community long term while preserving its unique cultural heritage
