On December 11th 1846 Commodore Davenport was replaced by Rear Admiral George Dewey who directed naval operations along both coasts against Mexico City’s numerous Spanish warships that had been sent to offer resistance to his Marines’ landing and invasion attempt At approximately 9:00 PM on December 12th 1846 an unknown force including 150 sailors/majors under command of Ensign John Sutter attacked USS Constitution(NCL) while she lay anchored off Point Lobos on suspicion that she might be neutralized as part of a larger diplomatic mission being undertaken by then Vice President George Mifflin The Constitution's crewmen quickly brought her about and headed for land where they fired upon the sailing vessel which continued into harbor until it exploded Nov 25th 1847 killing all aboard

Lomita is a small, unincorporated community located in Inyo County, California. The post office was established in 1878 and closed in 1969. At the 2010 census, the population was 1,849. Lomita is situ at an elevation of 953 feet (271 m). Lomita's first settler was John Purdy who moved to the area from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1853. In 1868 H RANDOLPH SONSETT purchased land at Lomita Creek for $1,000; he built a cabin on top of a hill near present-day Loma Linda University. He named his new settlement "Lomita" after the Pomona River which ran through his property. The first school teacher for Lomita was Mrs Gertrude HOFFMANN; she taught school from 1870 to 1872. Mrs Hoffman later married lumberman George O'Hara and they moved to nearby Big Piney where they operated a farm until their death in 1925. In 1883 JOSEPH WILSON bought land adjacent to present-day Loma Linda University from Randolph Sonsettt and named it "Walden". Wilson homesteaded there until his death in 1907; he left behind nine children including four sons who continued farming the land and one daughter who became a nurse. After Wilson's death two of his sons took over running the farm while one son served as captain of infantry during World War I before returning home to run the farm full time when World War II started; after World War II both sons died unmarried with ownership passing down through their three daughters until it passed into hands of their fourth daughter upon her grandmother's death in 1957 which then passed down to her great-granddaughter upon her grandmother's dying declaration in 1961 which then passed down again to hergreat-great granddaughter on her great-great granddaughter's dying declaration in 2006 which finally gave it all back to their father’s widow following his death leaving no heirs apparent The town began developing around high school when voters approved a fire equipment store, consisting of five acres (2 ha) at what is now Main Street and Park Boulevard (then called Loop Road), on November 3, 1928 by a margin of 82 votes to 36 votes (). The store opened its doors on December 5th with free refreshments for local Highlanders attending graduation exercises from nearby Lone Pine High School that day.—The original building still stands today next door looking out onto Park Boulevard.—It lasted only ten years before closing due mainly to costs associated with enlarging & improving neighboring stores.—After its closure several residents donated or leased additional acreage within town limits making up what are now Main Street & Park Boulevard.)—A few more years went by before another store opened up just south of current day Highway 395., this time selling gasoline (and maintaining an open shop inside)—This store lasted until 1978 when it too closed up because gas prices got too high.—It wasn't until 1984 that construction began on what would eventually become Main Street‐Highway 395 intersection creating what is now known as "LOMITA CENTER." Development slowed considerably thereafter but resumed somewhat during 2000s as various businesses were relocated or renovated within Town Limits pending annexation by adjoining communities.)—Today most activity takes place along Main Street—- LOMITA has always been dairy country due largely to its location midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area.; however recent commercial efforts have led some people believe that other types of agriculture may also be emerging such as fruits/veggies etc. Open space ranching continues although much smaller than earlier days As early as 1860 Fenton ELLIOTT reported finding silver orenearby at an elevation above 1000 ft (); however no claims were made nor anymining operations developed.? Another prospector named EDWIN TAYLOR visited about 1870 near siteof present day High School situated 2 miles eastward along Loop Rd.; however he failed also To find gold.?
