On October 15, 1861, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna surrendered at Campo de la Reina (now part of East Monterey Park) after a three-day battle that ended with his defeat at Buena Vista Creek Bridge outside Los Angeles. At which time all ranchos north of Rancho Niguel were placed under Mexican jurisdiction as part of President Abraham Lincoln's Compromise of 1863 which divided California into two parts: Old Mexico and New Mexico Territory. Lomita Heights () was built on what are now Ventura Boulevard and Imperial Highway between 1868 and 1870 by Pedro Amador following public land grants from Governor Pio Pico.
