Lompoc, California is a small town located in the San Luis Obispo County seat of Monterey. The village was established in 1887 and is within the old Army post boundaries. Lompoc became an airforce base in 1948 and has been home to various USAF units ever since. The first USAF unit stationed at Lompoc was the 44th Fighter Wing which arrived on September 5, 1948. The wing was replaced by the 9th Fighter Wing on October 1, 1958. The 43d Bombardment Group (Heavy) arrived at Lompoc on February 17, 1951 and became part of Ninth Air Force; it disembarks from USS Hornet (CV-8) for its first operational mission on March 2. The last USAF unit to arrive at Lompoc was the 3d Tactical Missile Wing which arrived on December 15, 1957 and activated as part of Fourth Air Force under Tenth Air Force control until its disbandment in 1959. all USAF units were withdrawn from active duty at Lompoc except for two: the 9th Fighter Wing which continued to fly combat missions untilactivated on August 29, 1966 due to budgetary reasons and re-activated as an ANG unit under Third Air Force jurisdiction; and Special Operations Command's Delta Company (Airborne Forces Expeditionary Unit) which remains inactive today but hosts events such as military flyovers during Christmas celebrations. Today only a few tourism related businesses operate out of what once was an active USAF base with most residents now living or working nearby local universities or municipalities such as Benicia or Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary where access to airspace allows civilian aircraft operations

In 1961, he was transferred to Headquarters USAF and he became Assistant Commander for Forces Programs. In 1969, Colonel Emory retired from the Air Force and moved to Lompoc AFB where he continued serving as Commanding Officer of 1st Bombardment Wing until his retirement in 1987. After his retirement from service, he lived in Lompoc until his death in 2001.

In 1926 it had 3 grocery stores and 12 restaurants; today it has only 1 grocery store and 4 restaurants
