During the Cold War, the Army also stationed its command post here. The base closed down in the 1990s, but remnants of it can still be seen today in Lompoc. The Lompoc, California army Garrison was established on December 10th, 1854. The first unit to be deployed in the California gold rush was the 1st Battalion of Infantry from San Luis Obispo County. The battalion arrived in Lompoc on December 17th and took up their positions near the old Central Pacific Railroad tracks. They were joined by a 2nd Battalion of Infantry from Santa Cruz County on January 4th and operated out of Fort Point at the mouth of Coyote Creek. In 1862, an additional battalion of infantry was sent to Lompoc from San Francisco County. This battalion became known as Company F and patrolled the shoreline around Fort Point and Coyote Creek. On February 3rd, Company F relieved the 1st Battalion at Fort Point and continued patrols until May 6th when they left for Sacramento to take part in General Grant's army campaign against Confederate forces there. On May 14th, Company F reached Placerville after spending two weeks traveling through very harsh country that had been blasted by winter rains and snow storms. They stopped at Graton Springs before continuing their journey northeast through Mono National Forest to Yuba River where they disembarked their boats and took possession of a small cabin used by local miners in order to avoid being raided by outlaws while traveling through hostile territory occupied by Union troops under General George Crook. After landing at Yuba River, Company F marched overland for several miles before halting at Clearwater Hill which served as their camp for the night while they built some logs into a wooden stockade fortification perimeter around their new campsite. Lompoc is a town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,141 at the 2000 census. Lompoc is located on the Pacific Coast and lies about 19 miles east of downtownSan Luis Obispo. It was founded by pioneers in 1876 as a small settlement on the banks of the Santa Lucia River. In 1882 Lompoc became part of the newly created city of San Luis Obispo. In 1906 it merger with other nearby towns to form what is now known as the City of Lompoc. The principal business district still includes several large shopping malls and a wide variety of businesses including transportation, real estate, manufacturing, food service and tourism. The University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus occupies a significant portion of eastern sideof town near Interstate 5 and Highway 101 Business Loop (I-5). UCSC has been one factor in the growth and revitalization of Lompoc over recent decades; more than half of families who live in or around Lompoc have graduate degrees from UCSC institutions or programs. The many industries that continue to thrive in this diverse community include aerospace engineering, health care/hospitality services, retail trade, government contracting and technology companies
The Lompoc area was first settled by theño and mulatto families in the mid-18th century. The town was founded on April 10, 1848, when Jeremiah Smith, a white man and member of the American Party, landed onshore in a small boat to trade goods with local Native Americans. A year later, California became part of the United States and Lompoc became one of its initial settlements. In 1870, Lompoc's population had grown to over 1,000 people; however, it only experienced modest growth until after World War II when new development began to boom in the town. By 1970, Lompoc had reached its peak as an agricultural center with over 100 businesses employing over 350 workers. However, as economic conditions deteriorated throughout most of the 1990s and 2000s, decline has set in for Lompoc. Today there are only a few business owners left who continue to operate their businesses out of their homes; many others have turned their properties into parks or retirement homes.
