Lompoc, California is a small town in the San Luis Obispo County of California. It is located on the Central Coast of California and just east of Monterey Bay. The population was 5,693 as of 2010. Lompoc is part of the Monterey Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lompoc were led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769 during his explorations across North America. He named the area Los Padres National Forest after his patron saint, Padre Francisco Xavier Anselmo de la Croix y Cámpora. In 1821, Antonio Canseco founded Mission San Juan Capistrano here and began missionary work among the Native Americans who lived in and around present-day Lompoc. A large rancho was developed along Highway 1 near present-day Canseco Park and included land that would eventually become part of Lompoc Township. In 1850, three years after Mexican independence from Spain, General Pedro Gabriel García Martínez formed a new government under which Californios were given their own vote and an elected governor became head of state instead of royal governors like previous administrations. As a result, many Mexican immigrants arrived in Alta California to find land they could purchase or establish themselves on as farmers or ranchers. This process continued through most of California's Gold Rush era until 1848 when Mexican property owners won their right to vote through legislation passed by the State Senate; however, it did not take effect until January 1st following passage by Governor Manuel Noriega into law due to objections from then-Senate President John Wickersham (R-San Diego). Lompoc is a small town in the San Luis Obispo County of California, United States. It was founded in 1848 by James Lompoc, an American Revolutionary War veteran and Mexican-American landowner. At its peak, Lompoc had a population of around 2,000 people. Today it has a population of about 100 and is home to the largest concentration of Italian Americans in Northern California. The community was named for James Lompoc's father-in-law, John Atherton (1786–1856). The first residents of Lompoc were white Protestants who emigrated from England and Ireland. They soon began to mix with the local Native American populations and eventually formed their own cultures. In 1853, a group of Californians arrived seeking gold near the mouth of the San Joaquin River. Some settlers decided to move to this new land, while others chose to remain in Lompoc. By 1861, there were over 30 homes on the town square and more than 50 businesses employing 100 or more people. In 1865, during the Civil War, soldiers from nearby Monterey attacked Lompoc with cannons and explosives; all but one civilian died in the attack! The event remains oneof history's most infamous crimes against civilians ever committed in California. After the war ended, many veterans returned to find their homes destroyed or burned down by local militia members looking for booty still present at that time within what is now downtown Lompoc . However Reconstruction began which led finally to Gilded Age conditions as numerous railroad entrepreneurs moved into town establishing luxurious hotels and estates which would continue until World War II when most jobs dried up due to automation brought about by technology changes like radioactives making production impossible without expensive containment systems etcetera
Lompoc was founded in 1851 by John Lompoc and his wife, Nancy. The first post office was opened in 1852. In 1865, the town became part of the newly formed San Francisco County. It was annexed to Fresno County in 1898.
