Lompoc is a town in Marin County, California. The population was 17,827 at the 2010 census. Lompoc is located on thesouth side of Sausalito Bay, about 12 miles east of San Francisco and about 20 miles north ofOakland. It has been a small coastal community since its establishment by Japanese Americans during World War II; the town's current size came about as a result of post-World War II settlement by Anglo-Americans who had moved into the area after the war. The name "Lompoc" means "high water mark." The town began as an agricultural village on Highway 1, east of Sausalito, established in 1915 by Japanese American troops stationed at Camp Seawolf in Carpinteria. In 1923, when that camp reopened after being closed for several years due to money shortages caused by the Great Depression, Lompoc became part of it and continued to grow as an agricultural center with dairy, pigs, chickens and other livestock farming until 1949. During that time there were only two businesses - Japantown Mall (now Macy's)and Golden Gate Marina - which were both open for business for just a few months each year due to prohibition laws then in effect. In 1951 Lompoc annexed what is now western Marin County; Prior to that it was split between Marin County and Contra Costa County. After annexation much development took place within Lompoc itself: first housing developments sprang up around Interstate 80/Upper Richmond Road/Sausalito Boulevard; then shops opened near Laguna Beach Boulevard/Avalon Avenue; finally major roads such as I-80 were constructed through the town making it easier and faster to get around than when it was smaller and more isolated. Today many people living in Lompoc volunteer their time working with various organizations such as Humboldt Park United Way or First United Methodist Church which work together to provide social services such as child care or elderly care; these types of services are non-existent or very limited in most larger communities across Marin county. Lompoc is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 9,442 at the 2010 census. Lompoc is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County. It is located on the shore of Monterey Bay and is one of the most affluent cities in California. The first Europeans to visit what would become Lompoc were Spanish missionaries in 1769–1770. Father Antonio Nunez founded a mission here on an undeveloped site now near Main Street and Park Avenue. In 1821, Captain George Vancouver anchored his ship HMS Discovery off the coast of Lompoc while exploring Santa Cruz County for Spain. While ashore, Vancouver's crew ran into Native Americans who claimed the area as their landowning territory—the first known contact between Europeans and Native Americans in that part of California. Captain James Cook visited Mission Nunez in 1800 as part of his exploration of northwestern California during his time as captain of HMS Resolution. He named it "Lompoc" after Manuel de Lamport y Pardo, 1st Baron de la Mole (1681-1757), captain general of Peru from 1796 until his death at sea en route back to Peru from Manila Bay on 8 January 1799 during the Quincie Expedition under Captains Juan Bautista Elcano and Francisco José Valdivia on board HMS Beagle (). La Mole had been sent by King Carlos III with orders to explore North America westward beyond Cape Horn before returning home through South America to report back to court about British claims in that area; he also explored parts now belonging to northern San Luis Obispo County including present-day Monterey Peninsula and Pebble Beach In 1846, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, it established its own government here called Benicia Republicán (Benicia District).
