Lompoc is a city in Southern California, United States. The population was 71,014 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Luis Obispo Peninsula, part of the Central Coast region. Lompoc is one of eight cities included in the Port Hueneme/Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Lompoc were Native American tribes who lived near Mission San Gabriel and Mission Concepción before moving to present-day Lompoc about 1821. A smallpox epidemic in 1837 killed more than 60% of the town's residents, and for many years it was thought that smallpox had originated from an Indian attack on mission property. In 1853, a group of Englishman named James Irvine built a sawmill on the south side of Pismo Creek and called it Irvine Mills after their captain in command during their expedition to explore California under George Vancouver. The town began to grow rapidly after Irvine started shipping goods by boat up Pismo Creek and across Santa Cruz Strait to Los Angeles County through his mill; Lompoc became known as "Irvine's Foothill." In 1905, Don Menzies developed land east of downtown into what would become North Hollywood while still living in England; he renamed it Menzies Rancho Hosgood after his Scottish father-in-law Hosgood (1849–1924). After Menziess' death in 1915, his son Cecil took over management of the rancho; he changed its name to Paramount Pictures Corporation in 1926 due to movie tie-ins with other properties owned by Paramount Pictures parent company Viacom Incorporated (later CBS Corporation). Lompoc became an incorporated city on December 3, 1927 when all but two blocks within its boundaries were annexed by neighboring Thousand Oaks. On October 15, 1960 Lompoc voters passed a resolution annexing portions of Carpinteria just south of Redondo Beach Boulevard; this annexation served as impetus for then Mayor Arturo Fraga's decision to build houses behind City Hall instead of inside City limits – becoming one of only two cities everTo do so (the other being Ventura). In 1970s and 1980s growth slowed due to low birthrates among Angelenos working outside Ofstedially Qualified Occupations categories such as education or health care professionals; however new housing developments have resumed growth since 2000s with large single family homes becoming available throughout much central business district including Main Street which bisects Watts Avenue NE & NW between First Baptist Church & Van Nuys Boulevard
