It is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first coffee shops opened up in Lompoc during prohibition days in the early 1920s. By 1925, there were over a dozen coffee shops open in town and by 1930, there were 22. In 1937, Lompoc's first grocery store started selling coffee. The stores continued to sell coffee until 1994 when Starbucks opened up shop here in 1995. In that year, Starbucks became one of the largest companies in America with its presence across 25 countries including Lompoc and many other small towns within commuting distance of Seattle’s Central District like Bellevue and Redmond Oregon. Lompoc is known as an agricultural center and production area for grapes and other vegetables. The Lompoc Railroad served the community until it was discontinued in 1915. Today, there are no passenger trains running through Lompoc, but buses do connect with nearby towns and cities. The first permanent European residents to arrive in Mono County were two brothers who established a farmstead on May 15, 1851, about eight miles south of what is now Lompoc (then called Monterrey). They named their farm San Felipe de las Guevas after Saint Felipe's Day - one day before Mission San Francisco Xavier arrived to establish missions in southern California. After farming here for several years, they went east to found a new settlement at Redondo Beach on December 17, 1852; this became known as Redondo Beach Cove (). In 1857–58 Juan Bautista Rivera (1807–1872) built a cabin near present-day Yucca Valley while prospecting for oil fields that would later be developed by his brother Pedro Rivera y Salinas (1814–1887), both from Veracruz state in Mexico City city; they also explored Rancho Cucamonga northwest of present day Torrance on November 7, 1857 (). This rancho extended into northern Los Angeles county including parts of today's Montebello and Baldwin Hills neighborhoods., In 1859 he married Doña María de la Concepción Vallejo (died 1850), daughter of Don José Vallejo y Ulloa(1795–1850) who had come from Alta California during Mexican independence War under US leadership.; their children included: Juan Bautista Rivera y Vallejo (baptized January 3, 1860 – died March 1st 1902), Manuel Antonio Rivera y Ulloa (born October 2nd 1861 – died February 20th 1944), Luis Maria Rivera y Ulloa(born 1862 – died 1939) Héctor José Rivera y Ulloa(born 1865 – died 1951). From her marriage she bore him: Pablo Antonio Rivera YUlloza(baptized March 11th 1870 – died October 22nd 1966) Aurelio Augustín Rivera YUlloza(baptized January 12th 1871 – date unknown). A few years later another group of Spanish immigrants founded Villa Hermosa about three miles east of present day Signal Hill on April 17th 1861 (), naming it after Queen Victoria's favorite flower — Hermosa means "rose" or "hued rose." She granted them land at Santa Monica Boulevard and Spring Street southwest of downtown Los Angeles (); Villa Hermosa became part of Southern Californian history as well as Hollywood culture when actor/director Cecil B DeMille filmed his silent movie epic “Hollywood” there between 1922 and 1928 starring Lon Chaney Jr., Norma Talmadge and others at various points along its route acrossSouthern California.. Dutchman Hendrik Vander Haegen received 5 acres adjacent to what is now Vineyard Haven Road north side Of Seal Beach () on September 25th 1800 from Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena following exchanged gift according to Ranchos Grant Act No . 44 which vested title immediately in such gentleman & his heirs thenceforth without any further survey or trouble.* In 1863 Hector José Reyes Seche Niño purchased 640 acres adjoining Seal Beach Creek from John Fitchy for $2 peracre (). Reyes Seche Niño began building homes there around 1865-66 using logs salvaged from the old railroad track between Seal Beach and Crescent City
