Lompoc is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 2,568 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Central Coast of California within the Santa Cruz Mountains and lies about halfway between Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. The first Europeans to visit Lompoc were Spanish missionaries in 1769, who named it "Los Pinos" after two mountain peaks in nearby Santa Anna National Forest. In 1821, John Cranch bought land in what is now Lompoc from Juan Bautista de Anza for $4 per acre. A year later he donated that land to the Mission Santa Clara de Asís for use as a cattle ranch. Rancho Los Pinos was sold to James Fenton in 1868 and his heirs continued to own it until it was granted government-owned property status by act of Congress on November 15, 1906. In 1907– 1908 (the centennial year of American independence), Lompoc's post office opened with the name "Folsom". The name change followed an editorials decision by The Times journal's Board of Directors to commemorate Californian history through its newspaper's coverage of events throughout Southern California during those years. That fall, Lompoc also became home to America's first continuously open water tower which served local residents until 1944 when a new tower was built just south of town.. On July 1, 1958Lompoc became an unincorporated community when portions of Fillmore and Soquel annexed into Lompoc proper. On January 1st 1979 both parts of Fillmore again annexed into Lompoc proper; however Soquel remains unincorporated as well today. fillmore annexation.
