The USAF was founded as an arm of the Department of War and served as a branch of the military ever since. In 1949, Congress authorized the establishment of apsarae (army units) within the USAF to provide reinforcement for US forces overseas. The first airforce unit stationed in Long Beach was also established here in 1948. It was known as Air Defense Command’s Second Flight Test Unit and operated out of Nellis AFB. This base supported fighter jets and bombers during Operation drive-by bombing missions against suspected Communist targets in South Korea. Later on, Air Defense Command’s Third Flight Test Unit arrived at Nellis AFB in 1951 and became responsible for conducting missile tests and providing airspace security for nuclear weapons testing by American atomic scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Third Flight Test Unit also conducted research into advanced jet engine technology which would later be used on America’s first jet fighter –the Lockheed P-38 Lightning! In 1957, AFSC activated Ninth Flying Training Wing which had been transferred from Davis-Monthan AFB Arizona earlier that year. The wing trained new pilots to fly Boeing 707 planes equipped with ejection seats for flying low over enemy territory to assess anti-aircraft defences before aerial combat against Nazi Germany occurred! Over time this wing became one of America’s most respected aviation units thanks to its highly skilled Pilots/Airmen! In 1963, Aerospace Industries Corporation (AIC) relocated their operations from Fullerton, California to Long Beach after purchasing land east of Marine Field Boulevard.* During their time here AIC developed many exciting technologies such as stealth Fighter Aircraft which were eventually accepted by both militaries around the world!* *AIC left Long Beach abruptly after only 10 years due to budget cuts however their legacy will always be felt here in Southern California!

Today, much of what makes up downtown Long Beach were developed by contractor Jack London during this time period – such as Alameda Street between Second Street and Broadway Streets which still bears his name (Alameda Avenue runs parallel to Harbor Boulevard), John Fenton Square at Third Street/Broadway North (named for one of Jack London’s business partners), Douglas Park at First Place/Harbor Boulevard East, and finally City Hall Plaza at Fourth Street/Broadway South (the current site). As Los Angeles grew increasingly congested during World War II, developers began looking for ways to create more open space within their boundaries so they could make room for new residential developments. In 1951, Mayor Tom Bradley created two separate streets within DowntownLongBeach called “State Route 2” after then-Governor Earl Warren who had supported the city’s annexation into Los Angeles County upon its establishment as a municipality
