Gift history in Long Beach, California dates back to the early 1800s when an army detachment stationed here formed part of General Santa Anna’s Mexican War campaign. In 1847, the city was incorporated and the first post office opened on December 12th. The city was named for Major General John A. Long who served as Superintendent of Public Instruction during the antebellum period. The first military installation in Long Beach came about in 1872 when a small artillery battery, Camp Doniphan, was established at Point Conception by Commodore James W. Ketchum and his ship Americana. The battery operated until 1876 when it relocated to Fort Miramar at Huachuca Pass. Over time, more and more military installations were erected throughout the city including Fort Hill (1909), Marine Barracks (1928), Coast Guard Station (1960) and finally Air Defense Command Headquarters in 1994. Today, Military Memorial Park contains a variety of artifacts from both local and international wars dating back to World War II including three tanks from World War I which are still on display within the park’s boundaries today! Additionally, there is also a Vietnam Veterans Memorial inside of City Hall that includes photos/memories from many Bay Area residents who fought for our country overseas!
