The Long Beach Naval Militia was organized in 1887, and the present regiment was formed on November 15, 1924. The original Long Beach Naval Militia Infantry Regiment numbered 3rd Battalion (1st Marines) and 1st Regiment (Marines). On December 12th, 1941 the battalion was redesignated as the 2nd Marine Rifle Brigade. On September 9th, 1945 the regiment disbanded as part of a reorganization of the United States military after World War II.

Long Beach is a city in southern California, on the Pacific coast. As of 2010, the population was 127,545. The name "Long Beach" is from the Tongva word "lan ba", meaning "inland river." It was named after Loma Laguna, which is located in present-day Orange County. The first permanent European settlers were Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico Indians who arrived in 1769 and built a small chapel there. In 1821, Long Beach became part of Mexico City and was known as Pueblo de la Reforma. When California became an independent state in 1850, Long Beach became part of Los Angeles County. In 1888, three drifters named John Waddell, James Irvine and Edward Hutton founded what would become known as the Waddell Navigation Company to explore possible ocean trade with Asia through Long Beach Harbor. The company landed at La Jolla Cove on October 15 and began trading goods with local Native American tribes. On November 3rd they reached their first goal: They captured a Channel Islands white elephant! The company continued trading until its dissolution in 1893 by order of President Grover Cleveland because it was found not to be doing much business on account of new transportation methods such as steamships and railways being available at that time. The last ship to trade through La Jolla Harbour was the SS Missouri on December 5th 1893″ according to history-commissioned research done for “A History of Californias Coastline” prepared for USC Dornsife by Bill Moseley & Don Freeman (1991). Unfortunately during this time many valuable artifacts were lost including cannons used by Mexican forces against Anglo settlers during the late 1800s wars between California and Mexico (See Timeline: Anglo/Mexican Wars). However some interesting items such as medals from various wars fought during this period still exist today including one given to Confederate General Robert E Lee during his visit to Long Beach in 1870′s! It wasn’t until 1912 when another shipping venture called Cabrillo Line turned up along what is now Naval Base Pier 1 just north of downtown which would soon become world famous for its seafood production thanks to Marlin Island where so much lobster could be caught without having any impact on water quality or coastal habitats
Long Beach was founded in 1907 by the Long Beach Company, a group of businessmen and politicians. The company built a wharf on the then-separate mouth of Long Beach Harbor and began shipping goods to Los Angeles. In 1912, the company merged with the Southern California Navigation Company, which had been founded in 1881. In 1916, the two companies united to become the Northern Californian Navigation Company. In 1922, they merged again to form the Pacific Coast Navigation Company (PCN). PCN was acquired by America's biggest shipping company, J.P. Morgan & Co., in 1935. The company became known as American Lines and Express Corporation (ALEC). ALEC was renamed Alaskan Copper Mines Ltd., Inc., in 1957 after copper production from its mines at Anaconda and Anaconda Hills increased significantly; however copper production ceased operations in 1971.
