Long Beach, California is a city located in Orange County, California on the Pacific Coast. As of the 2010 census, the population was 171,711. The city proper has a total area of 64.5 square miles (163 km2), making it one of the largest cities in Los Angeles County and one of the most ethnically diverse in Southern California. The first Europeans to visit Long Beach were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his brother Isidro on October 15, 1542. They anchored off what is now Seal Beach and made landfall as " Nuestra Señora de la Concepción" on November 2nd while sailing from San Diego to Monterey Bay. A year later Portuguese ships sailed into Long Beach Harbor where they found wine being unloaded from vessels coming up the coast from Mexico City. In 1693 Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve created Villa Elvetta on Rancho La Brea east of present-day downtown Long Beach for José Nieto y Cano who had married Barbara del Carmen Mendieta y Mendiola; widow of José Nieto Crespí). In 1853 Lighthouse keeper Manuel García built an automated lighthouse at Point Conception which used Fresnel lenses until 1898 when it was replaced by a gaslight system with six lights using 6' (1.8 m) candles each – one for every 3 minutes during daylight hours On November 1st 1854 Joshua Saunders acquired 5 acres (20,000 m2) south of present-day Downtown long beach for $500 from Captain James Cook’s Bounty crew that had landed there four days earlier after their shipwreck off Point Conception (). He named his land “Saunders” after himself and erected a small wooden cabin or “ homestead” soon thereafter (). On December 21st 1855 Saunders sold portions of his land totaling 36 acres (14 ha) including nearly all within today’s DowntownLongBeach limits to George Harkness who named it “Harkness Heights” (). In 1865 Harkness sold additional lands extending inlandward beyond today's limits to Wm Beattie who renamed it "Beattie Heights". Today much of what once comprised Saunders land has been developed into DowntownLongBeach including much of what is now Mansion Row () . After several years searching for a place to build his new home due to financial troubles caused by overbuilding (), Californian entrepreneur Cyrus McCormick purchased portions of Harkness Heights from Wm Beattie in 1875 for $10,000 (). McCormick founded the Central Pacific Railroad which established its main line through town linking Long Beach with Ventura County before terminating at Santa ana() in 1890 (); thus beginning the longest continuous railroad presence in Southern California history Later that same year McCormick donated 200 acres (80 ha) west side lot number 6 along Main Street between Mission Boulevard and Westminster Avenue to The Catholic Church () which began building its first church there – St Dominic School – inside what is now Cathedral Park () on July 25th 1896(). This marks also date when large partsCHICAGO STREET & LONG BEACH Boulevards were reworked starting at NE Corner Of CHICAGO STREET & LONG BEACH Boulevards

Long Beach is a city in Southern California and the county seat of Orange County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 162,567. The city is located on Long Beach Island in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The island is bordered by the City of Manhattan to its east, Canyon Hills to its north, Garden Grove to its south, and Hermosa Beach to its west. The first people who lived in what is now Long Beach were Native American natives who hunted sea lions and seals from their sun drenched nests on Isla de la Paloma (Island of La Costa). In 1871, two citizens of Huntington Beach petitioned for incorporation as a town because they felt that no other community could offer them good soil for farming or a climate that would be beneficial for their business interests. The first vote was held on April 20th, 1871 and it passed with a large majority. A year later, on July 25th 1870 Dr. George Witherspoon purchased 5 acres (20 ha) at what is now Main Street corner Post Office Square for $2 per foot (0.50 m), becoming one of the initial developers in town. On January 15th 1893 an act was unanimously passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors granting cities power to prohibit white men from residing therein without special permits which were required for all new municipalities created after December 12th 1886 when California became a state under Ulysses S Grant’s presidency. This prohibition applied only within city limits which at that time included all present-day Long Beach precincts except Harbor Heights annexed by Long Beach in 1907 pursuant to an agreement between then Mayor Hahn and then Supervisor Burriss; Harbor Heights had been part of Huntington Beach since November 1st 1888 when it was annexed into Los Angeles County as part of Measure B following passage by both houses of the State Legislature providing for such annexation contingency upon ratification by voters thereof as provided in Article XVIII section 2(a) ot & 3(a) ot & 4of said Constitution Of The State Of California (1888). In 1902–1903, John D Condon built his large summer home here – known today as Condon Hall – while working as head engineer with Edison Electric Illuminating Company…DCP also built several others nearby including: Playland Park (now Century Park), just northeast of downtown; Westchester Drive South near Seal Stadium/UCLA football game days; Cottonwood Road off Airport Boulevard near Point Loma Nazarene University; and many others throughout southern Orange County during this time period including Anaheim Hills (now Anaheim); Fullerton; Newport News; Carson Valley; Poway Junction…. During World War II much activity took place at Seal Stadium/UCLA football game days here at Condon Hall due to Naval training exercises conducted there preceding air raids over North America….Condon Hall served also as Air Training Command headquarters during this time period…..It currently functions as “Dracula” theme park attraction featuring Horror movies nightly beginning Halloween night through New Year's Day
