Long Beach, California is a city in Southern California on the Pacific Ocean. The population of Long Beach was 573,834 as of the 2010 census. The City of Long Beach is located on the southernmost edge of Los Angeles County and is included in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Long Beach was first inhabited by Tongva people who lived along present-day Channel Islands and Downey Island. In 1848, when Mexico won its independence from Spain, Mexican settlers founded what became known as Rancho La Puente y Caulfield on Mud Island (now part of Huntington Park). The first post office in town was established in 1857, and incorporation as a city took place on April 3, 1915. Inland Empire trade routes crossed through Long Beach; goods such as salt water fish and palm oil were shipped down the coast to San Francisco and other cities. By 1900s, shipbuilding had become an important aspect of Long Beach’s economy. From 1901 until 1916, shipbuilder John Fitch built more than fifty vessels for various American fleets including those that brought World War I veterans home to America. During World War II, Long Beach became one of two U.S.-occupied ports along with Pearl Harbor during Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. More than 2 million Japanese citizens were interned during World War II in camps across North America; most were released after Japan's surrender in 1945 but some remain incarcerated today including Shoko Asahara (the mother figure behind Aum Shinrikyo), one of three so-called "comfort women" used by Japan during World War II; she remains incarcerated at Nagasaki Detention Center outside Tokyo despite appeals from her supporters around the world
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the United States for over 80 years. The Coast Guard was created on May 14, 1915, when the US Congress passed a resolution that called for the creation of a national coast guard. On December 6, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established the National Defense Service Board to oversee and create civilian control of the Coast Guard. In 1940, after World War II ended and America entered into an era of austerity, Congress passed the National Security Act which gave rise to what is now known as the Homeland Security Department. The Coast Guard was reorganized in 1947 into six operational sectors: patrol, search and rescue, icebreaking and coastal security; each with its own command structure and headquarters. Patrol Sector Headquarters was located at New York City from 1951-1957 before being moved to Miami Beach in 1958. In 2006-2007 Captain John J. Mooney led a project titled "Heritage at Sea: A History of U.S.-Canada Border Cooperation" which researched 1) how international cooperation between Canada and U.S., starting with customs duties in 1867 until 1959 when they became military allies; 2)the history behind Coast Guard's maritime heritage which includes memorials such as HMCS Iroquois (Avenue Q), USCGC Neptune (Laguna Seca), CG Cutter Marblehead (Michigan River), CG Staten Island Ferry; 3)Uruguay’s role in Washington’s “wet dream” of controlling Uruguayan territorial waters through Operation Magellan during 1955-1956; 4)the role of Canadian Forces assets along both Canada’s southern border - including HMCS Windsor (Cumberland County), CF Halifax Bay Bridge /CF Montreal Harbour Bridge /CHcedex Montréal – during operations such as Northern Watch from 1982-1983; 5)the highlight reel for Canadian Forces contribution toOperation Restore Hope - involving support services provided by CF Princess Patricia's Light Infantry Regiment within FSB Phoenix near Basra Province Iraq during 2003 & 2004; 6)a range of bilateral projects including joint Arctic Drilling Programshirts/Shirts/Belt shown here courtesy of our friends at Maritime Museum Victoria
