Long Beach, California is a city located in Southern California on the Pacific coast. The population of Long Beach was 1,815,735 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Orange County and one of the most populous cities in Los Angeles County. The City of Long Beach borders Seal Beach to the south and Huntington Park to the north. The area now occupied by Long Beach was first populated by Tongva people. In 1847, Captain John Dibble discovered land that would become Long Beach when he sailed through what is now called Newport Harbor. A year later, Gold was found on shore near what is now known as Point Conception and it became part of Rancho Santa Ana de Anza (later Chavez Ravine). Anglo-Americans claimed most of southern Orange County for themselves in 1853 when they acquired Rancho San Pedro y Santa Ana from José Castro del Valle. This victory put an end to any Native American resistance to white settlement throughout southern Orange County. In 1887, James Irvine developed a system of water pipes called Aqueducts which delivered water from hills southwest of downtown Long Beach directly into homes and businesses along Pennsylvania Avenue near North Coast Highway/State Route 138. Today aqueducts remain an important part of local life and landscape, providing drinking water for over 600,000 residents including many hospitals and universities across Long Beach proper as well as portions beyond Seal beach including Huntington Park and Hermosa Mesa

Long Beach, California was founded in 1871 by Captain John A. Long and his men from the USS Constitution. The city's name is derived from its proximity to the Long Beach Channel. It became a major port for goods and passengers during the 19th century, helped spur development in nearby Los Angeles, and continues to play a significant role in local culture today. The first permanent settler in what is now Long Beach was José Gomez on November 7, 1871. By 1875, lengthy construction of the Chihuahua-US Railroad had advanced through portions of present-day downtownLong Beach and much of what is now North Harbor (including parts of Inner Harbor), including Point Santa Ana, were settled. On January 15, 1886, LBT becoming an incorporated town with a population of 513 residents when it annexing part of Wilmington Township. In 1898 it annexed all but one block of Port Hueneme before seceding from Orange County to become its own municipality under then-Mayor James Sweeny’s leadership. During World War II many military personnel stationed at Naval Air Station Sealand near Sealand Mesa used the beach as an airfield; coastal artillery batteries also operated out of LBT during that time period. The city government converted two industrial sites into housing units during 1949–1950; these conversions are known collectively as "The Landing." In 1959 USC campus opened adjacent to Playa del Rey Boulevard; after years of planning by City Manager Harry Watkins and City Councilmember Laird Doherty this important link in USC's growing metropolitan area came about when both campuses were combined with neighboring Gilroy City following voter approval in 1955 despite objections from some who feared their southern edge would be sacrificed while northside growth increased rapidly. Upon incorporation into Los Angeles County as a city on April 1 1960 over Uptown Los Angeles (the largest municipality within county boundaries at that time) Long Beach annexed much more land eastward than southward - making it one of the most eastern cities within Los Angeles County by any measure other than size or annexation rate (Uptown has since shrunk considerably). Today remnants remain only along El Camino Real between Downtown LA/USA Blvd./Pico Blvd./Redondo Blvd./City Hall Ave./LBI Ave.- currently Donnybrook Dr., formerly Highland Dr.- which intersects inland via Redondo Coastal Drive
The Long Beach area was inhabited by the Chumash people for at least 12,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1821, a group of American soldiers under General Antonio Vallejo explored and mapped the coast of California. They named the area after Major Francisco de la Roca y Muñoz, who had been commanding an expedition exploring southern California during the 1770s. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1835 when American Commodore John D. Sloat discovered and named the harbor of Long Beach after him. The town began to grow rapidly around this time, thanks to its location at the mouth of Harbor Boulevard and its access to water resources. By 1870, Long Beach had over 1,500 residents and was becoming a major center for trade and commerce on the East Coast of America. In 1896, Los Angeles County was created from parts of five previous counties in California;Long Beach became one of these new counties.
