The area that is now Long Beach was first populated by the Tongva people who lived on the mainland and in what is now known as Orange County. In 1847, the United States Congress created Rancho Los Alamitos - part of what is now Orange County - to be used for grazing land for U.S. Department of Agriculture employees and their families. The lands were purchased from the Tongva by Jesse Helms in 1958 and became part of the City of Long Beach on July 1, 1959. In 1800ized Chumash Indians occupied this site before moving south along Surfside Boulevard into present-day Huntington BEACH through channels dug by paddle canoes during times of drought buffalo herds roamed nearby between missions chaparral/hardwood forest then oak woodland covered islands off shore until very recently where Channel Islands National Park Preserve preserves them today! A few years ago archeologists discovered a teepee dating back to 1700 AD near present day PCH!
