In 1901, two brothers by the name of Henry Miller built a sugar refinery onancock beach which became one of the most important operations in modern times for Orange County and contributed significantly to its growth and success during that time as well as into our current day economy In 1933, Harry S Truman made Long Beach his home during his presidential campaign stop before winning with 50% of precincts reporting Afterward he remarked "long beach makes me feel like I'm living in Washington D.C." On July 15th 1935 Japanese Americans were Evacuated from their homes during World War II when warplanes bombed Pearl Harbor . Many longbeach residents helped care for and housed many evacuees throughout those difficult days including Mrs. Dorothy Halsey Mackintosh who later became known as "The Angel Of Long Beach" . Many local businesses also took on civic roles such asProvidence Hospice which operated until 1984 and ran many free meals to help keep soldiers and their families fed while they waited for transport back home

The first Europeans to arrive in California were the Spanish, who discovered the area in 1769. The next year, an American-Spanish expedition was sent to explore the coast and find new land. The party consisted of Captain Benjamin Foulke and his men, as well as three mission priests. On July 24, 1776, they landed at San Diego on the southern coast of present-day California. After a brief exploration, they decided not to plant crops or build contact with Native Americans because of the great distances and difficult terrain. Instead, they set out for Monterey Bay in order to trade goods with the local population. In 1777, Captain James Cook sailed into America's Pacific Ocean and made landfall on what is now Vancouver Island in British Columbia. He knew that he had found a new landmass when he saw HMS "Dolphin" anchored off shore on December 12th. At first glance it appeared to be part of Asia but upon closer inspection it was realized that this must be North America because there were no mountains or rivers like those found in Europe. Cook named the land Polynesia after him because he could not decide whether it should be called Canada or America (the word “Canada’s” would have been too long). After a failed attempt at landing on Vancouver Island due to bad weather, Cook sailed back home and reported his findings back home on February 3rd 1801. This event marked how far technology had come since Cook's time! A few years later under Governor Manuel Michelino de la Junta y Menendez captain Juan Rodríguez de Valdivia discovered Baja California which included today's Los Angeles County
