The history of Long Beach goes back to 1871 when it was founded as an agricultural town on the banks of the river San Gabriel River by Mormon pioneers. The name "Long Beach" came from Llanview – a small settlement located about two miles (3 km) north-west of present-day Long Beach on what is now considered to be its northeast corner. When Pasadena became an independent city in 1907 and annexed most of Orange County, Long Beach became one of its first cities. In 1916, following annexation by Los Angeles County and with new land added eastward from downtown along the ocean front, Long Beach now had a total area exceeding that of any other incorporated municipality in Los Angeles County. In 1965, after years during which various plans were made for the city's growth but no action was taken due to financial constraints brought on by Proposition 13 (Proposition 10), then-mayor Jerry Sanders led a group that successfully persuaded county supervisors to approve Measure U – also known as the " redevelopment plan." This proposition directed county taxpayers toward developing land within city limits into high-density housing developments that would replace traditional single-family homes with condominiums and apartment buildings; it also created state government funding for transportation improvements required for such large scale redevelopment projects. Although initial predictions stated that much of this new development would be built on sites near Seventh Street Naval Air Station (now Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst), only 2/3rds—or $60 million—of all planned development actually took place in Long Beach until 1990 when Measure V passed without incident; this amounts to more than $1 billion worth of real estate investment over 20 years alone involving some 5 million jobs and tens of thousands dwelling units statewide! On July 1st 1969 Mayor Sanders dedicated Recreation Pier #2 as America's first municipally owned open water swimming pool - making it possible for people from all walks of life including senior citizens and children from low income families to sunbathe in clear blue waters year round!
