The National Guard gift history in Long Beach, California began on December 12, 1947 when the City of Long Beach hired a group of six soldiers to deliver gifts to local citizens. The group was made up of two officers and four enlisted men from the Coast Guard. The mission was to make Christmas present deliveries for local families and provide support during the 1948 Christmas season. These soldiers were known as "The Six Soldiers from Santa Barbara." Since then, the National Guard has delivered gifts to locals in Long Beach on various occasions. In 1957, a detachment from Fort Hancock arrived inLong Beach and began delivering gifts. The first year that they did this was also the year that national guard troops helped with the First Annual Santa Ana Parade. From 1959-1966, there were also detachments stationed at Seal Beach and Huntington Beach before being moved to Southern California permanently in 1967. All along these years, there have been some constants: The generosity of those who volunteer their time to give back to society by gifting something special or beautiful for someone else. Long Beach, California is a city located in Southern California. The population was 403,813 as of the 2010 census. It has been part of the United States since 1959. The city is sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Mountains on Long Beach Island. The origins of Long Beach can be traced back to 1847 when Captain John Westersvelt founded what would become known as Mayport on Montero Peninsula. At first it was only a small trading post and fishing village with a few homes. Commodore James K. Polk visited Mayport in 1848 and recommended that it be moved to its current location on long beach island so that more people could access the rich resources at its doorstep including shipbuilding, fishing, and farming potential. In 1852, Mayor Lorenzo Dowell designated land east of Main Street for the future town of Long Beach while also authorizing streets and lots to be developed west of Main Street for residential use by citizens only. In 1870, due to lack of available water supplies,Mayor David Lowenthal authorized the construction of two ditches – one along North Torrey Boulevard (now Utah Avenue) from Union Boulevard to Center Street and another along South Torrey Boulevard from Center Street to Justus Way (now Lemon Grove Avenue). These Additional Ditches were needed because dry up during heavy rains which often occurred during winter months in southern California at that time. Today’s Bay Bridge connects downtown Los Angeles with eastern San Diego County via these additional ditches making them important transportation arteries for both regions. -On November 3rd 1886 groundbreaking took place for what would become called "Pacific Electric Railway" mainline extension from Downtown Los Angeles north through Commerce City & West Hills then down Torrey Blvd past Midtown LAS until reaching Baldwin Park near Lakewood Ranch - this line today still provides vital commuter service into Downtown LA! -In 1937 Pacific Electric merged with LA Municipal Railway becoming "LA Metro". Today's LA Metro offers extensive rail services throughout Southern California

With a GDP of $78 billion in 2009, it is the eighth largest metropolitan area in North America and the third largest metro area within California. The first Europeans to enter what is now Long Beach were traders sailing from San Diego up the coast to trade with Mexican pirates raiding ships off Santa Barbara Island. A landing by Father Junipero Serra on March 17, 1769, named for St. John's patron saint, may have been the first successful European mission to enter what is now Long Beach Harbor. The town began as an agricultural community with farmers growing hay and wheat through 1872; however, water supplies became inadequate as oil rigs were built along coastal towns such as Seal Beach and Huntington Beach during World War II. In 1951, BHP Billiton Corporations opened its world's first refinery in Seal Beach and Rasputin's Russian Restaurant opened its doors becoming one of the first restaurants in town that served pre-packaged food items such as piroshki (Russian dumplings). In 1964–1965, then Mayor Angelo Rossi convened an election campaignthemed parade down Second Street which served as a referendum on whether or not to annex portions of Anaheim which were alsogrowing rapidly due to their Disneyland Resort attraction being newly built there at that time ( Anaheim had only annexed part of Tustin back then ). Overwhelmingly majorities voted against annexation ( 76% vs 22%) but Rossi refused to give up his right to seek re-election even though he lost by over 20 percentage points when all optical media voting was taken into account). In 1978 voters passed Measure M creating a city council with five members instead of three like present day while still providing mayor direct control over municipal services through ordinances passed annually without vote by Councilmember including regulations governing fire safety code enforcement etc.; Measure M also allowed annexation of neighboring unincorporated areas eastward towards Fullerton (). After years of negotiations led by City Manager Don Armstrong who later became Mayor himself and ran for office again two years later (winning), On December 12th 1990 City Council passed ordinance annexing portions northeastward towards Burbank which would become Glendale . The following year Burbank successfully submitted an application for cityhood which was granted on November 15th 1991 Long beach has experienced rapid growth since gentrification started taking hold starting around 2000 throughout much of Downtown LongBeach before moving out into Sunny Side/Palo Alto/First Hill neighborhoods adjacent thereto about 2010s onwards suburbanization continuing unabated although some new development has occurred along First Hill corridor especially near downtown core - See www.longbeachinfo.org for more detailed overview
