The navy has been a part of Long Beach since the early 1800s. The first sign that the navy was coming to Long Beach was when Captain George Vancouver brought his ship, HMS Discovery, to anchor in the harbor in 1792. The navy presence continued with Commodore David Dixon Porter's arrival in 1846 and Commodore John D. Sloat's arrival in 1851. In 1903, the first battleship built in California was launched here- USS Arizona. After World War II, the navy left for good and Long Beach became an agricultural town again. However, over time it has become one of Southern California's most important tourist destinations due to its historical significance as a naval base and Naval Sea Training Center (NSTC). In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in naval history due to growing concerns about our future security and defense needs. As a result, donations from military members and civilians have helped support research into Navy ships, weapons systems, and tactics dating back centuries. One example is the USS Constitution Museum which opened its doors on Main Street in downtown Long Beach on November 12th of this year. This museum features nearly 100 warships from both world wars includingUSS Constitution (the oldest commissioned warship still afloat), USS Perry (the only submersible nuclear-powered vessel ever used by the U.S.), USS Langley (the first commercially made helicopter squadron),and more! This museum is open daily 9am-5pm except Christmas Day when it is closed at 1pm PT! Admission is free for all visitors! She was named after Rear Admiral George Preble, who served as Commanding Officer of Destroyer Squadron 5 at Pearl Harbor when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. 4) USS Constellation- A further addition to America’s naval fleet, the Constellation saw service during World War II under both Ulysses S Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt Sr.. As part of Task Force 58 off Okinawa shelled Japanese positions on July 25th 1945 while under fire from shore batteries

A group of entrepreneurs founded the City of Los Angeles (later known as Pasadena) on April 14,1847; Mexican traders had settled in these areas for seasonal trade purposes only two days earlier when they landed at Santa Monica Pier on May 4th seeking passage home across San Pedro Bay.
