Los Alamitos was founded in 1847 by founder George Washington Kaufman and his brother, Samuel. The town was named for the two volcanoes that sit on the edge of Los Alamitos Bay, east of San Francisco. In 1857, Kaufman sold his interest in the city to Henry Pritchard, who built up much of what is today downtownLos Angeles and then developed most of northeastern Pasadena into one of Southern California's biggest neighborhoods. From its founding until 1911 when it became an incorporated city, Los Alamitos spent its entire existence as a single rural township with a population numbering only about 1,500 people. However, over time there has been significant development in the area surrounding Los Alamitos including new high-rise buildings such as One Larkin Place and Microsoft's Ballpark Plaza; retail conversions such as Long Beach Variety Store; new public housing developments such as North Hills Housing Authority; and major contributions by businesses and individuals to both civic life and local economy alike. Today there are more than 20 neighborhood associations operating in this diverse community located just south of Downtown Los Angeles on several miles (32 km) of streets bounded by residential areas including Koreatown/ Miracle Mile to the east; Chinatown/South Park to the north; Midtown/Anaheim Hills to the west; UCLA campus areas including Westwood Village and Artesia Heights;;and some unincorporated areas around downtown that have come under increasing urbanization pressures like Westchester Countyline Community Services District No 3 which straddles City limits between Downtown LA proper and Compton Valley
