Los Alamitos is a city in southern California, United States. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County and the home of The University of Southern California. The population was 298,723 at the 2010 census. It was founded on July 16, 1849 by George Washington Morrison and his brother-in-law Dr. John C. Maynard as a small community near present day Westwood Village in what is now Pasadena. After years of growth and development, Los Alamitos became an independent city in 1907 when it seceded from Pasadena Municipal District. In 1969, it merged with neighboring city Monterrey to form what is now called "Monterrey Unified City". The first people to inhabit what is now Los Alamitos were Native American Laguna Apaches who lived in Canyon Lake before moving downriver to live nearpresent day La Crescenta and Glendale. A group of Mexican settlers known as the Missionarios arrived in 1821 and began construction on Alcalde Jose Mariana's new mission (later monastery) San Francisco de Asís which would become part of Rancho Santa Fe de Alisal shortly afterwards. The Missionaries named their new town Encino after José Sepúlveda, one of their number; however, this name did not stick for long because Alcalde Mariana found that most people associated Encino with Monterey Bay (now Marin County). In 1827–28, Pedro Funes y Mesa built a trading post at the junction of Redondo Creek and Antoine Road within present day Monterrey which served as a base for commerce between Mexico City and Alisal Station. On January 25, 1830 Juan Bautista Juncos established himself at Antoine Road and Redondo Creek with about 20 followers including three men armed only with bows and arrows; he built an adobe ranch house there which still stands today known as Juncos Adobe Ruins National Monument #8562). By 1840 about 400 acres had been sold by Juncos to José Joaquín Vasquez & Co., merchants fromMexico City who were looking for land east of Pico Boulevard on which they could build storesrooms for their shipping business on both sides of Redondo Creek; they also purchased 200 acres from Fernando Valenzuela along Antoine Road where he had constructed aadobe farmhouse known as Villa del Valenzuela that still stands today adjacent to Modern El Centro High School across from Interstate 405 South near Hawthorne Boulevard/Rancho Margarita Park in southeast Los Angeles County]. In 1842 two more Mexicaleros bought 100 acres at Antoine Road: Manuel Micheltorena & Co., who started building the first adobe courthouse west of downtown LA; later renamed Town Hall House Museum #8686]], while Miguel Angel Acevedo acquired 50 additional acres upriver just south of current day Canoga Park Drive.] On February 15th 1850 George Washington Morrison erected his log cabin located north east corner lot #5388 on what is now northwest corner lot #6191 block bounded by North East Corner Street (north), Northeast Corner Street (southwest), 1915 Airport Rd NW (west) & Canoga Ave SW (east)]. This was followed by Captain James Wainwright's log cabin erected March 10th 1850 also located northeast corner lot #5388 blocks north east corner street southwest intersection 1915 Airport Rd NW (& west side towards Orange County line)).
