Willis and he ordered the erection of a lighthouse to help protect the coast. In 1926, Captain John F. Kennedy became head of the Coast Guard in Los Alamitos and ordered the construction of a new harbor which would accommodate large ships. The new harbor allowed larger ships to berth at one location and made it easier for vessels to navigate throughLOS ALAMITOS Harbor is now known as "The CVBG Channel" because it once housed two large battleships- USS Enterprise (CVN 64) and USS Lexington (CVN 56). On December 6, 1944, USS San Francisco (CA-37) collided with SS Tacoma while underway from San Diego to Seattle Bay. The collision caused $5 million in damage to both ships and resulted in 146 crew members lost along with four officers and 52 enlisted men on board San Francisco. Santa Barbara County received responsibility for damages resulting from that accident under an agreement between the United States Navy and local authorities. In 1947 Congress passed legislationocating responsibility for maritime accidents between state agencies on different coasts so that these incidents would no longer fall within Admiralty jurisdiction but be subject to federal regulation by the National Maritime Commission. Eighty years later on May 15th, 2002 USCGC Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT), also known as "Los Alamitos", departed from Long Beach Naval Shipyard en route to her homeport of Yokohama after being deployed aboard ASW vessel assigned thereto during Operation Olympic Games 2003 off Okinawa Island Japan

The station served as a lifesaver and supplies ship for local fishermen, until 1912 when it became an airfield. In 1940, the Coast Guard Station was redesignated as the Los Alamitos Sector Control Center and it continued to serve as an important aviation resource until its closure in 1984. The sector control center was replaced by the present-day Los Alamitos Sector Office in 1997.
Los Alamitos is located in the Mojave Desert of California, about an hour southeast of Phoenix. It was established as a small town in 1872 by farmers and ranchers who had discovered gold in the area. The name Los Alamitos comes from two Spanish words: alam (a mountain) and -tolsi (a town). The first American settlement at Alamogordo was founded in 1848 by Captain George Goodwin and his party, searching for new goldfields. In 1852, Los Alamitos became part of the newly created County of San Bernardino, which included parts of present-day Arizona and Nevada. By 1870, silver had been found near Los Alamitos, making it a boomtown. Businesses grew rapidly thanks to increased transportation access via wagon trains that passed through the area on their way to prospect for other minerals such as coal and gold. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses in Los Alamitos with a population of 3200 people. A bridge was built over the San Gabriel River just south of downtown to connect Los Alamitos with adjacent townships; this made it easy for goods to be transported between those communities and downtownLos Angeles. The late 1800s were a time when many technological advances were being made which would have a significant impact on society both large and small. One such advance was electricity; during this time there were no streetlights or telephone poles; all communication took place through Morse code using bells and whistles instead. Los Alamitos is an incorporated city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 25,847 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of the Los Alamitos National Laboratory and its largest employer, both in terms of jobs and residents. The city's name comes from two places: the first, Alamitos Creek (originally Alamo Creek), flows through it before reaching Lake Merritt. The second place where the creek hit a small dam was also where landowner James Irvine built his home in 1874. In 1881, Irvine donated land to create a public square in honor of his donation and established Los Alamitos as a town center with stores, churches and other businesses around it. The discovery of plutonium during World War II led to dramatic changes for Los Alamitos. plutonium production transitioned from being done at old munitions factories into what became one of the nation's leading nuclear weapons laboratories. Today, Los Alamitos consists mostly of research facilities that help make new technologies available for use by Americans and worldwide customers alike; however some manufacturing still takes place here including semiconductor fabs used in smartphones and tablets as well as car parts.
