Los Alamitos is a small town in California, located about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. The town was founded by early American scientists and engineers in the late 1800s as a testing ground for new technology. Today, Los Alamitos is home to some of the most famous research laboratories in the United States, including Los Alamitos National Laboratory (LANL), which specializes in nuclear weapons research. The townsite that now stands at the base of Mount Wilson was first settled by Native Americans around 1775. The area was part of Rancho San José de la Cañada de Santa Fe, granted to Manuel Nieto by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado on November 1, 1785. The grant included land for a military post and other purposes. In 1834, Josef Martinez donated his property to the state of California for use as a public school system landing field and depot for troops fighting against Mexican forces during the Californio War (1846-1847). In 1865, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter formalized plans to establish naval research station at Monterey Bay after studying reports regarding possible earthquake sites along California's coastlines. On October 3rd, 1865 he signed letters patent creating LANL with Dr. Louis Janssen as its first director and General John Woolridge as its first superintendent. At LANL's inception there were only 10 men employed full time: Drs. Janssen and Woolridge recruited additional personnel through compulsory military service during World War II; however these civilians soon left LANL due to their chemistries activity at Berkeley Lab where they continued their work until 1957 when they retired due to age restrictions set forth by then-Director Ralph Eberhard effective upon establishment of LANL itself within DARPA's new Directorate of Nucleic Acids Research (DARN). In 1961 Drs Janssen and Woolridge were honored with Nobel Prizes in Chemistry for their work developing beta radiation detection methods used extensively during Cold War spy activities such as Operation Mockingbird . This story does not stop at just science though! After leaving LANL employees continue working on many groundbreaking projects throughout eastern North America while maintaining close ties with their old colleagues here at LANL including founding members of DARPA who continue play an important role today such as Jeffrey Cray , Don Handelman,, Kari Skogland
