Los Alamitos is a city in Alameda County, California. The population was 24,815 at the 2010 census. It is located just east of Oakland, between Fremont and Hayward Streets on the east side of San Leandro Bay. The name "Alamitos" may be derived from Spanish meaning "hills". In 1852 José Castro founded anvil works near the present-day intersection of Alma and San Pablo Streets to produce nails for use in building during the early days of California. The first post office in Los Alamitos opened on December 12th, 1853. The town was platted in 1871 by Elias Howe with a population of about 100 people. By 1880 it had grown to over 1,500 people and became known as one of the most beautiful small towns in California due to its many trees and large enough land area to support a market garden. The 20 mile long (32 km) railroad connecting Oakland with Fremont came through Los Alamitos which made it possible for farmers to sell their products directly to consumers instead of going through larger cities like Berkeley or Sacramento. This spurred businesses such as butchers, grocery stores, flour mills and breweries into existence which continue until this day - these businesses have helped make Los Alamitos an important cultural center for eastern Contra Costa County.
