Coffee has been drank and enjoyed by humans since before recorded history. Ancient Egyptians knew about coffee and used it as a stimulant to help them achieve their goals during long arduous tasks. In 1847, while working for General Evans Atherton in Palmdale, California, George Washington Carver discovered that cottonseed oil could be used to produce roasted coffee beans. In 1895, Jules Belanger started selling French Press Coffee from his home on Santa Monica Boulevard near Westwood Boulevard in Beverly Hills. At first Belanger sold only ground coffee; but later he began selling brewed coffee too. By 1912, all liquor had been outlawed in Los Angeles so brewing no longer constituted a separate business activity - all coffees were now just called "coffee". However, this proclamation did not stop people from buying pre-packaged cupboards full of Starbucks-style coffee pods which they would place in their cars for easy purchase while on vacation - still one of the most common tourist attractions today! In 1846 it became part of the United States when President Polk awarded it to California for its bravery and self-reliance during the Mexican–American War. The name Alamitos comes from Spanish words meaning "odorous place." The first coffeehouses in Monterey were founded by Pedro Fages and his partner Francisco Lopez near what is now Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) 3 south of downtown Los Angeles in 1847. In 1960 Los Alamitos merged with neighboring Montebello to form what is now La Cañada Flintridge. The towns' original names are still used today: Los Alamitos (Albuquerque), Montebello (Montebello), and La Cañada Flintridge (Californian).
